In-office "phone booths" reduce distractions
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When is a "halfalogue" worse than a monologue or a dialogue? Whenever it's being overheard. A study to be published in the journal, Psychological Science, has dubbed the part of a cell phone conversation that is overheard a "halfalogue" and explains why they're so irritating. It's because "the unpredictable informational content of halfalogues . . . results in distraction . . . Less-predictable speech results in more distraction for a listener engaged in other tasks." This finding supports the construction of special, isolated areas for phone calls in offices and policies that encourage the use of those "phone booths." More

Home offices and outdoor living spaces are top choices for special function areas in homes
AIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Homes are currently being designed with an eye toward affordability due to the dramatic decline in house prices in recent years in most areas of the country. Still, many households are willing to invest in home features, systems and products that promote greater energy efficiency and accessibility throughout the home. Even with the general downsizing of homes, there is growing interest in outside living spaces, home offices, and mud rooms, according to the AIA's Home Design Trends Survey for the second quarter of 2010. MOMA exhibit shows we are where we eat
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen," a new exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, tracks how kitchen design has evolved in the past century or so, from assembly line-like layouts during Industrialization to the proliferation of Tupperware after World War II and beyond. If there's a theme to it all, it's that kitchens and what's inside them have always echoed, and at times rebuked, the political, social and economic tenor of the times. More

New technology is evolving so rapidly that many offices need to keep up with it. Moreover, modern medical equipment also gives practitioners more opportunity to customize equipment from a user and aesthetic perspective. Most critical to space planning for new equipment is to have an equipment planning team that understands the types of equipment that are available and their requirements, such as floor flatness, deflection and vibration.
