Growth Slows but Inquiries Remain Strong in August IDBI
ASID
Business conditions at interior design firms encountered an unexpected slowdown in August as the Interior Design Billings Index slipped to a score of 53 from a score of 63 in July, indicating that fewer firms experienced growth in billings from the previous month. The overall pace of design services billings, however, remains in positive territory with a score above 50 (indicating growth), as it has for the last 32 consecutive months. Opportunities for future work appear to be plentiful as firms continue to report strong inquiries.

The Magic Behind Design
HD Network
Much like those masters of illusion, designers, too, showcase the unexpected. Once the research is done, designers “can conjure and make seen what hasn’t been seen before,” says Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. “[Magicians] make you wonder how things are so different than they were because of their intervention,” Wanders continues. “Designers take their audience on a journey, and the customer trusts us to do something interesting, and we don’t have to explain ourselves.”

Domestic Interior Paintings Show How the 1 Percent Lived in the 19th Century
Hyperallergic
Before the advent of photography, those who could afford it commissioned artists to paint small, highly detailed watercolors of the interiors of their homes that they would then slip, like photographs, into display albums. Such paintings offer a glimpse into the decadent lifestyles of the 19th century’s well-to-do and the art of recording finely decorated interior spaces. Currently, 47 such paintings are featured in House Proud, an exhibition at the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.

3 Strategies for Effective Common Spaces in Affordable Multifamily
Multi-Housing News
Creating good, affordable multifamily housing is about more than just providing a place for people to live and sleep. It’s about maximizing human connections. If residents form bonds with each other, it strengthens their ties to the place and to the surrounding community. It extends their idea of home beyond their own front door and inspires them to care for the building and look out for their neighbors. If the developer, architects, and interior designers provide a well-designed mix of common spaces, then affordable housing can help people establish and nurture these bonds. There are three types of common space to pay attention to, each with its own unique function.

The Growing Demand for Spaces That Consider Our Health
Metropolis
A healing environment arises when human beings draw from the complexity of nature, and conceive of themselves as in touch with their inner feelings and emotions. People are increasingly demanding environments that lower stress: living and working spaces that act to keep us healthy. Biophilia does not mean adding “green” elements to sculptural designs in order to make them more alluring to clients. That is top-down design. Rather, biophilia means designing structures from the bottom up by infusing architecture’s schema with processes parallel to those of biology to develop and reproduce. These processes heal because they reflect the ordered complexity associated with the adaptivity of natural systems.

Ten Products Perfect for Aged Care Facilities
Architecture & Design
The design framework for aged and health care projects focuses on human health and wellbeing rather than disease. Wider corridors, ease-of-movement door widths, especially for bathrooms, and easier-to-use furniture, fixturesHi, and fittings are ways to promote mobility. Natural light, music, nature (interaction via larger and lowered patient room windows), art and civic spaces that blur the boundary between traditional hospital settings and community interaction are also important. Here are ten products that aid architects and designers on the quest to promote patient-centric healing environments for health care facilities.
