Realtors turn to designers to help sell apartments
The New York Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During the real estate boom, eager buyers bought apartments requiring enormous imagination to picture as homes: They bought unbuilt apartments or empty spaces with blank walls. Today, buyers are much less likely to take risks on apartments where they cannot figure out how to fit in their sofa bed or sideboard. So brokers have been redecorating old model units or filling unfurnished apartments. More

Sci-fi set designer creates futuristic food park
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is there anything more depressing than a food court? The fluorescent lighting, the endless sea of Formica tables, the sad, fake trees. Well, someone's finally trying to change things for the better: Celeb restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow has attempted to turn 20,000 square feet of a chichi Manhattan hotel into a high-tech, modernist foodie mecca. He calls it FoodParc. And the designer behind it is none other than nerd god Syd Mead (set designer for "Blade Runner," "Aliens," and "Tron"). More

New Aging conference brings together science and design
Senior Housing News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The New Aging conference held last Friday and Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design was a combination of lectures and workshops that discussed what seniors were looking for when it comes to living options in various product categories such as assisted living, nursing care, independent living and aging at home. A portion looked at advances in science through the concepts of cell regeneration, hormone therapy, genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. The scientific presenters challenged the architects in the audience to think about how to design spaces if there is a rapid jump in life expectancy through science when an average lifespan may increase beyond 125 years old by 2050. Other presentations took a more traditional approach to address senior living architecture and design and presented domestic and international ideas about living at home, independent living communities and nursing homes. Builders explore new approaches to model homes
Builder    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The conventional practice of hiring an interior designer to do everything from soup to nuts in designing a model home, including purchasing and installation, simply isn't an option anymore for many cash-strapped builders, particularly those needing to offload excess inventory. Some have resorted to small vignettes in off-site design centers in lieu of furnishing actual models. Others have brought the merchandising function in-house in an effort to reduce expenses. More

Neonatal ICU staff perceives enhanced workplace quality with single-family room design
InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Studies have shown that open-bay NICUs may have negative effects on infant patients and contribute to staff stress. Although single-family room NICUs are assumed to offer both short and long term benefits for infants, little research exists on how these environments affect nursing and other staff. A newly published study finds that single-family room NICUs may increase staff's overall satisfaction with their physical work environment. More

White noise beneficial for some students
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Adding white noise to school environments enhances performance of some students and harms that of others. The cognitive performance of inattentive students improves and attentive students' performance deteriorates when white noise is introduced, according a study to be published in the journal "Behavioral and Brain Functions." The researchers suggest that their findings, if replicated, have "great practical applications . . . offering a non-invasive way to improve school results in children with attentional problems."
