Affluent consumers maintain spending despite slow economy
Luxury Daily    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to a recent study conducted by the American Affluence Research Center, the nation's most well-heeled consumers do not plan to cut back on their spending, despite expressing a negative outlook about the economy in general. Luxury brands and luxury marketers should be focused on the wealthiest one percent because they are the least likely to be cutting back and are the most knowledgeable about the price points and brands that are true high-end luxury. A surprising finding is that there is a good interest in buying or building a new home. More

Socially responsible design is a whole lot harder than it looks
Metropolis Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More architects and designers than ever are working to save the world. They want to contribute not just to a healthy economy but also to a clean, well-regulated environment and peaceful society. And they're beating multiple paths to those ambitions: forming nonprofit companies or partaking in corporate social-responsibility initiatives, mobilizing students, partnering with NGOs, applying for foundation grants, and participating in competitions trolling for innovative ideas. But are they getting any results? More

Accommodating disabilities in workplace a 'minefield'
Canadian Interiors    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's nothing new about an employer's duty to accommodate the needs of an employee with a disability. What's changing is the scope of what constitutes a disability and the range of options available to an employer seeking to accommodate an employee with a disability. There are no cookie cutter solutions to accommodation. The logical starting point is to look at ways of accommodating the employee within the existing job. More

Reasons to round over those square edges
Kitchen and Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Many architects and designers, especially those who favor a modern, industrial aesthetic, will specify square sharp edges and corners on countertops. Square edges, however, are prone to a number of problems and can be a safety hazard as well. From a functional standpoint, rounder edges are a better choice. More

ISO the perfect end table
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
End tables can add to both the functionality and aesthetics of a living room. But many end tables are too high or too large for the other furniture in the room, such as the sofa. One designer set out to find appropriately proportioned end tables. You can follow him on his journey. More

Organizing materials by subjective criteria
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Materials have tangible characteristics, such as hardness, texture and color. They also have subjective characteristics, such as the associations or emotions they may evoke. Organizing materials by subjective criteria can be useful when considering their applicability to context (formal vs. informal) or gender (masculine vs. feminine). Because subjective perceptions can be unique to an individual, applying this categorization system on a firmwide basis requires adapting standardizing criteria. More

Subway-map-inspired wayfinding
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Leave it to Scandinavia to make even government buildings look good. The Storehagen Atrium in Førde, Norway—which houses the national lottery and a local cultural ministry—tapped "human environment design" experts to create a simple wayfinding system that won't let visitors get lost. The designers took inspiration from the bold, color-coded signage of public transit. Much like a Tokyo subway line, each floor of the building has a unique color and number. More
