Healing environments benefit patients and the bottom line
Medical Office Today    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The hottest trend in medical office design today is the promotion of healing within these environments, and what that often means is humanizing them while negating their institutional air with the five tenets of healing design. People within these facilities tend to be more at ease which, in turn, makes them calmer and generally more cooperative. In addition, these new healing facilities attract more clientele and enjoy greatly reduced staff turnover, which makes them profitable. More

Giving the Empire State Building a holiday makeover
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Forget the calendar. It's the windows and lobbies of Manhattan's store and offices that offer the first sign: 'Tis the season in New York City. The lobby of the Empire State Building—with its gold leaf reindeer, 20-foot-tall art deco crystal trees and decked-out miniaturized versions of the building set in window displays—transformed itself for the season last week with the help of two different professional decorating teams. The result is intended to appeal to tenants and tourists alike, while leaving the landmark building’s famous Art Deco details visible. More

Colors of light influence emotional processing
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
European researchers, using MRI technology, have found that the color of light we are experiencing influences our emotional processing. They determined that "Blue light not only increased responses to emotional stimuli in the 'voice area' of the brain and in the hippocampus, which is important for memory processes, but also led to a tighter interaction between the voice area, the amygdala, which is a key area in emotion regulation, and the hypothalamus, which is essential for biological rhythms regulation by light." This research is consistent with previous work, which determined that blue light supports alertness and cognitive performance. More

Bank headquarters designed for total transparency
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mindful of the public's distrust of the finance industry, one of the world's largest bank headquarters has taken an architectural stand for radical openness. The ANZ Centre in Melbourne, Australia, is built around the idea of a "common" that opens the bank to its surroundings with wide balconies and natural light, as well as publicly accessible walkways to cafes, art galleries and the waterfront. Instead of locking its operations inside a forbidding fortress, ANZ wants its borders to feel permeable and inviting to the local community. More

Tranquility or vitality—green suits your mood
Diisynology    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Green is the most passive of colors. Because greens are in the middle wavelengths of visible light, they are easier for the eye sensors to distinguish and the brain to process, making them the most restful of colors. Yet as the color most often associated with nature, green symbolically conveys vitality, harmony and fecundity. From deep, primal verdures to soft, warm sage, choose the shade that suits the mood you seek to create. More
