As AWM celebrates our 60th Anniversary, we want to honor 60 women who have most inspired each of us. With our Sixty@60 initiative, we are conducting a national poll to determine the most inspirational women in media today, as determined by our nearly 10,000 community members. Oprah Winfrey is cementing her control over her struggling cable network. OWN announced that Winfrey will be taking over as CEO and chief creative officer of the Discovery-owned network. Winfrey has said that she believes part of what's contributed to her network's lackluster performance thus far has been her relative lack of involvement in the day-to-day process of shaping OWN's strategy and brand. New U: News Entrepreneurs Working Through UNITY is a competitive program for journalists of color who want to become entrepreneurs. Funded by The Ford Foundation, the New U fellowship supports and helps grow the creative ideas of participants through a national "start-up camp," which will be held Oct. 17-19 in Las Vegas. In addition to offering a unique formula-based in-training and one-on-one mentoring, the program includes a competition for four fellows to win $10,000 each in start-up funding to help realize their entrepreneurial ideas. The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council has been striving to push media ownership in the U.S. closer to the level of diversity that exists in the national census. It hailed the FCC's actions to move the ball forward on execution of the Local Community Radio Act, saying LPFM will be a great entry point for would-be broadcasters lacking access to the kind of capital needed for a full-power broadcast outlet.
