Willisch charms the press at LA Auto Show
New BMW NA boss introduces i8 concept    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Among the stars of the LA Auto Show were the new BMW i8 hybrid concept car, actress Paula Patton of the latest Mission: Impossible product-placement exercise — er, Tom Cruise movie — and the new head of BMW of North America, Ludwig Willisch (pictured left). The ebullient Willisch, who doubled sales of BMW M cars when he ran BMW M GmbH, is refreshingly outspoken and forthright; click here to read a brief Willisch interview by the LA Times' Jerry Hirsch — and note especially his comments on the X1 in the U.S.

MedJet Assist rates to go up in 2012
Members' 2011 price good through December    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One interesting member benefit for our more peripatetic members is the Medjet Assist medical evacuation program; as an individual or corporate member, if you are hospitalized more than 150 miles from home — in the U.S. or abroad — Medjet Assist will arrange comprehensive medical transportation to the hospital of your choice. BMW CCA members currently get coverage for $250 for an individual, or $385 for a family rate, but these prices will go up at the first of the year, to $260 and $395. The increase is modest, but if you're planning to enroll for 2012, it's worth your time to do it before the year runs out. Click here to visit the BMW CCA Membership Benefits page!

How BMW aims to outsell other luxury makes
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ludwig Willisch took over as president of BMW of North America at a fortuitous time. The German native joined the company in July, just as it was beginning a run that has BMW on target to edge out Mercedes-Benz and topple Lexus from an 11-year reign as the top-selling luxury make in America. Willisch visited the Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil the M5, a sports sedan he helped design, and several BMW electric and hybrid models. He talked with The Times about the importance of being No. 1 and BMW's place in the U.S. More

BMW 5 Series is in line for a new triturbo diesel engine
AutoWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Details leaked from a dealer conference recently held in Holland suggest that BMW's upcoming 550dX will be the first recipient of the German carmaker's new high-tech triturbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine. The radical new engine, which is rumored to use two traditional exhaust-blown turbochargers in combination with an electrically driven turbocharger to add low-end response, is planned to be offered exclusively with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Why BMW?
BMW Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is it purely because of the cars they make, or is it the company as a whole? Why not Mercedes, Audi or Lexus or any other manufacturer for that matter? Is it because of its design, tradition, quality, reliability or the brand's philosophy that attracts you? It can be anything and everything from the interior smell to the driver's position to the colors offered and even the cup holders! There is no right or wrong answer. Simply put: Why? More

BMW rocks the present and looks to the future
CNN Money    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Amid this difficult economic environment, sales of import luxury cars in the U.S. have actually improved. One manufacturer in particular stands out — not just for its performance today but also for its development of future strategies. That company is BMW Group. Instead of merely indulging in its prosperity, it is investing in new structural technologies and venturing ever further into the post-oil world. More

Editorial: Are you going to miss the 'Big 6' engines?
BMW Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Will you miss the big, naturally aspirated inline-six cylinder engines of BMW as we see the resurgence of the Turbo Era in road cars? It's a moot point because it looks like the forthcoming product line from BMW in the North American market will have no options for buyers to pick up a naturally aspirated inline six cylinder engine. It appears that literally every engine in BMW of North America's line-up could be be powered via a forced induction engine and that's a sad possible future to think about. More

Reports: Toyota, BMW to team up on fuel-saving engine technology
The Detroit News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW are planning to cooperate on clean engine technologies, say financial analysts, citing newspaper reports in Japan. A report by J.P. Morgan's Tokyo office said Toyota would obtain diesel engines from BMW, while providing BMW with hybrid technologies, based on a report in the Nikon Keizai Shimbun. The deal would capitalize on the two automakers' respective strengths and help Toyota reduce the negative impact on its earnings of unfavorable currency rates. More
