BMW M5 generates fake engine noise using stereo
CNET    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Sept. 27, 2011: For a driving enthusiast, there's nothing like the throaty roar of a well-tuned engine. However, as vehicle noise regulations, technological advances and general increases in build quality have continued to make vehicles ever quieter both outside and inside, some automakers have been seeking ways to preserve and enhance the visceral sound of an angry engine for their performance-oriented models. For example, Ford includes a sort of sound pipe that channels induction noise into the Mustang's cabin. BMW, on the other hand, has taken a different approach with the new M5's Active Sound Design technology, which artificially replicates engine noise in the cabin using the stereo system. More

BMW aims to maintain dominance with new 3 Series
MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Oct. 25, 2011: In an era of product proliferation, few vehicles better define a brand than the BMW 3-Series. It's not only the best-selling line in the compact luxury segment, it's also the top seller in the Bavarian maker's product portfolio. So there's good reason for all the attention being paid to the all new 2012 3-Series that's making its formal debut. With new products also on tap from other key competitors, this could be one of the most important launches BMW has had in a number of years. More

BMW brings 4-cylinder engine to 5 Series
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From July 12, 2011: BMW's midsize sedan is about to get a four-banger — two less cylinders than it has now — to save gas. In a surprise move, BMW says its recently introduced 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter, four-cylinder engine will make its way into the 2012 5-Series. The new engine will appear on the 528i and replace the naturally aspirated 3-liter six-cylinder, but returns the same horsepower. More

BMW drifting car stunt atop US Bank tower in Los Angeles
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief From July 5, 2011: BMW has just released this comically dramatic clip of one of their vehicles atop Los Angeles' U.S. Bank building. The car is "drifting" on the structure's helipad, which is the highest in the world. Drifting is now considered a sport — the goal is to turn the car so as to lose traction while continuing to drive at a high speed. More

BMW M5: No Touring or AWD, manual coming to US
Auto Evolution    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Oct. 25, 2011: BMW's M division is moving faster than ever these days, as it has to cope with competition that is more fierce than ever, as well as with a market that now also wants greener cars, not just fast ones. In between all these concerns, the M division has to make plans for the various details of its new models — specifically, the F10 M5. In a recent interview for Autoblog, Albert Biermann, the head of product development at BMW M GmbH, let some interesting things about the Power War fighter slip. More

BMW carbon factory lets motor vehicles follow road bike to lightness
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From June 20, 2011: BMW is spending $100 million to gain an edge on German luxury rivals by entering the commodities business. BMW is building its own carbon fiber factory, the first car maker to do so, to secure supply of the lightweight material and lower expenses by refining the production process. Even though carbon fiber has cost 20 times as much as steel, BMW is embracing the material to reduce the weight of its electric cars and counteract the added heft of their batteries. More

BMW returns to its roots with the 1 Series M Coupe
Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief From June 7, 2011: Since it first hit American roads in the late 1980s, BMW's mighty-mite M3 has gained nearly half a ton, growing from a light-footed 2,800-pound four-cylinder into a 3,700-pound V8 monster that is still at the top of its game as far as performance is concerned, but a little bulky and a pricey proposition at $61,000. Enter the 1 Series M Coupe, which for brevity's sake we'll call the 1M. The 1M is a return to BMW's modern day roots as the maker of relatively affordable, but sublimely capable luxury sports cars that started life as everyday compact sedans, such as the 2002 tii and the original M3. The good oil: BMW changes the numbers
The New Zealand Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Nov. 1, 2011: BMW traditionally launches its M3 as a coupe and follows later with the sedan. Not next year, however, when the new flyer surfaces. Word in Europe is that the M3 badge will appear only on the sedan. The reason is, apparently, that BMW wants something on which to pin a 4 Series badge. So what has been the two-door M3 will now become the M4. More

Car Advice    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief From Aug. 9, 2011: Many think it was the symbol of the propeller due to BMW's origin in creating aircraft engines, however it becomes clear that it's actually the Bavarian national colors arranged over the RAPP company logo. It makes for interesting watching and when someone talks about the blue and white propeller, you'll now know the real truth. More
