Workshop for Women in SETT
The Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (WinSETT Centre) will deliver a one-day professional development workshop in Winnipeg, MB, for women working in the engineering industry who are in their early to mid-careers. Becoming Leaders: An Introduction to Leadership Skills and Strategies Workshop for professional women in SETT (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Trades) is organized and supported by Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst, Chair of Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) Prairies Region and proudly sponsored by APEGM.
SIAST to gain polytechnic status
The Saskatchewan government introduced legislation that would give the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) authority to operate as a polytechnic institution, and that would change the name of the institution to "Saskatchewan Polytechnic." The proposed legislation will protect the term 'polytechnic,' allow SIAST to fundraise for property, gain the institute membership in Polytechnics Canada, allow SIAST to grant degrees, and enhance its opportunities for applied research. Saskatchewan expects both the act and its regulations to come into force in spring 2014.

SIAST gets $1.12 million from Husky Energy for Power Engineering Technology program
The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) recently announced a $1.12 million donation from Husky Energy to support the Power Engineering program at its Saskatoon campus. A portion of the donation will go towards upgrades to the Power Engineering Technology lab, and the remaining money will be dedicated to scholarships for students seeking their third-class power engineering certification. SIAST currently halts its training over the summer because there is no place to put the energy generated by the lab's boilers — with the planned renovations, the institution will be able to run its Power Engineering lab year round and increase lab capacity by 25 per cent, to almost 200 students, annually. Also, the scholarship portion is being matched by the province's Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship Program, which means up to 10 scholarships will be available per academic year over the next five years.
