American travelers prefer flexibility of the open road

Gas prices continue to hover around the $4-per-gallon mark, but most Americans still prefer the flexibility of a drive trip. New data from a Mandala Research/Solutionz study of American travelers suggests itinerary control is the primary reason why almost three-quarters (74 percent) opt to drive their own vehicle to their destination, compared to the 17 percent who choose air travel. That's one of the big conclusions drawn from
the survey conducted among 1,500 drive market travelers in the United States in January.

On Wednesday, April 27, CH&LA along with our partners, AAHOA and CABBI held the 10th Annual Legislative Action Summit at the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento. The morning began with informative sessions on topics including a federal update from AH&LA's EVP, Marlene Colucci, a panel discussion on Transient Occupancy Taxes and Online Travel Companies and a briefing on Senate Bill 432. CH&LA and its members oppose SB 432
relating to occupational safety and health standards for hotel housekeepers. This event followed a legislative reception held in conjunction with the CTTC, CRA, CalTravel and other industry partners, on the Capitol lawn. Over 500 industry leaders attended the reception with Governor Brown including many CH&LA members, staff and several members of the legislature.

Los Angeles County supervisors will consider plans to add more shopping, hotel rooms and office space in
Marina del Rey. Those plans have been fiercely resisted by a coalition of residents, recreational boaters and environmentalists who say the county-owned marina is being overdeveloped. County officials have said the dilapidated marina is in dire need of a facelift that will attract more people to the pleasure boat harbor.

Games expected to bring $15 million

The Inland Empire economy will get a shot in the arm in a few months when 6,000 police and firefighters gather in San Bernardino for the Western States Police and Fire Games. The June 4-11 competition
will feature 65 sporting activities and events throughout the Southland. With the athletes and their families needing food as well as lodging for the duration of the games, officials said they expect a nearly $15 million boost to the local economy.
