The Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu is often quoted as saying, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" The literal translation is "... begins beneath one's feet:" any action begins somewhere. It's what laboratories are often faced with when deciding to adopt paperless technology. Changing almost everything we do is a terribly long journey, and starting is the hardest part. Of course, it's really about choices. Our laboratories are fueled by a technology on its way out. Paper requisitions, instrument printouts, maintenance records, procedures, and reports are being replaced by electronic records. Ostensibly, "paperless" is a technological choice.More
