DOT creates official government website for distracted driving
U.S. Department of Transportation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Department of Transportation has created a website specifically to target the dangerous practice of distracted driving. According to a University of Utah study, using a cell phone use while driving, whether it's hand-held or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. The site includes helpful tools for employers including a sample Company Policy and a Sample Company Memo to Employees on Policy. More

A voice for golf
Golf Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Why is it that a generation of golf course operators has found itself reacting to laws and rules that leave them feeling, if not at times despised, then at least misunderstood? Probably because playing golf no more makes anyone an expert on the industry than watching a movie makes him or her Steven Spielberg. Mind you, Hollywood has a long history of dabbling in politics, whether raising campaign funds over cocktails or running for office like Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. More

Designing locker rooms with style
Club & Resort Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
By their very nature, locker rooms are where members and guests feel most at home. At their most basic, locker rooms are the place where members and guests shower, change their clothes and use the bathroom. They're also the places where everyone can kick back and relax—where boys can be boys and girls can gossip. But as clubs continue to improve the member and guest experience, these once-utilitarian spaces are evolving into much more. More

Century-old Spokane Club has changed its rules with the times
The Spokesman-Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If reverence for tradition had been allowed to choke the impetus for change, the distinctive Kirtland Cutter-designed building at Riverside Avenue and Monroe Street might well be one of downtown's "Long ago, that used to be..." landmarks. But the Spokane Club is still the Spokane Club. And that's because, time and again, the venerable private enclave's leaders have cracked open the elegant front door and glimpsed the future. More

Edgewood Yacht Club members determined to rebuild
The Providence Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The blackened remains of the Edgewood Yacht Club in Providence, R.I., served as the backdrop this past weekend for a rally by members who vow to rebuild after a fire destroyed the place they love during a severe storm that punished the region on Jan. 12. "We are going to rise like the phoenix, there's no doubt about it," said club secretary Flo Spenard, one of the more than 100 people who gathered on a frigid afternoon. "We're going to keep our friends and our memories — and make new ones." More

Why good ideas go bad
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Looking back over a few decades of dealing with innovators, large and small, there appear to be five reasons why some ideas make it and others don't. This is not an exhaustive list. Neither does it take into account factors such as finding a customer need state (or inventing one), financial issues or a host of other things budding innovators need to worry about. This is merely a summary of why some people seem to succeed and others don't, especially when it comes to making critical decisions about new ideas. More
