Broken Sound earns nation's second GEO Certified™ award
Business Wire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Fla., host of the 2011 PGA Champions Tour Allianz Championship, has become the second golf facility in the U.S. to be GEO Certified™ — the sustainability assurance of the international non-profit Golf Environment Organization (GEO). Broken Sound Club's staff and management have made environmental enhancement and corporate responsibility central to their business model since launching "green" initiatives three years ago, according to John Crean, CCM, general manager. The new testament of golf
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The most radical vision for a New World Order in golf is the Flogton project being pushed by a group of Silicon Valley executives whose front man is Scott McNealy, the co-founder and former chief executive of Sun Microsystems. In their view, the U.S. Golf Association's sanctioned game is simply too difficult to attract and retain enough to keep the game growing. More

Signs of upturn seen for golf courses
Winston-Salem Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the first time in a long time, there's optimism in the golf industry. That could mean a spike in public play around the country this year, according to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. In recent years, courses have closed because of a lack of play or a lack of capital. Both public and private courses have been affected. Rhett Evans, the chief executive officer of the GCSAA, said what he saw in January at the PGA Merchandise Show and Golf Industry Show in Orlando, Fla., bodes well. More

Project approved
Golf Course Industry Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite the recent decline in new course construction and subsequent rounds played, the golf course still remains the primary asset at the private club. The number of public golf courses has ballooned by nearly 50 percent since the early 1990s, compounding the oversupply of available golf. Many of these new public courses have excellent turf quality and architectural merit, and private clubs located in close proximity have been compelled to upgrade their facilities to remain competitive in the marketplace. More or less, it's fine time to join golf club
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to golf, membership does indeed have its privileges. But for the most part, being a member of a private club has meant hefty initiations or buying stock, expensive dues, and having to know the right people. That's not necessarily the case anymore. While joining some of the elite clubs still requires lots of money and stature, the country club landscape has changed dramatically over the past couple of decades. More

Sarasota Yacht Club sights set on Cuba
Sarasota Herald-Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Maybe it's the same hunt for the unknown that drove Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand Magellan to recast the world map by wind, sail and grit. But if you ask the well-to-do Sarasota sailors who are pleading with the federal government to travel to Cuba, there is an even deeper motivation — someone said it was off-limits. The idea to resurrect the Sarasota to Havana Regatta, and a 70-year-old tradition of racing from Florida's west coast to Cuba, seemed impossible at first. More

At a club for civil discussions, polarizing debate
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The 164-year-old Century Association in Midtown Manhattan, the country's pre-eminent club of arts and letters, trumpets itself as a sanctuary for civilized discussion of literature, music and theater. But these days, it is home to something far less polite: a gut-wrenching, at times acerbic internal battle over the rights and privileges of its female members, a matter that was supposed to have been resolved decades ago when the club granted admission to women.
