Legislation could restrict employer use of credit reports

Representative Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., introduced the Equal Employment for All Act (HR 321) which would prohibit the usage of credit checks for the purpose of making adverse employment decisions against current or prospective employees. Fourteen states nationwide are considering similar legislation including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont. More

Investors seek support to reopen golf course as a private club

A group of Jacksonville, Ark., investors is working toward reviving the recently closed Foxwood Golf Club. The investors made a purchase offer the first week in February to owner Ted Belden and plan to convert the formerly public golf course into a private club. The purchase offer is contingent on whether the investors can rally enough stockholders to commit to investing and enough people to purchasing club memberships. More

Union buys Hillcrest Golf Club in Minnesota for $4.3 million

A Minnesota pipefitters union has snapped up the old Hillcrest Golf Club in St. Paul, paying $4.3 million for the private club and vowing to keep it private for at least two years. The union said it hopes to breathe new life into the business, which has been in the red with sliding membership. The all-cash deal closed earlier this month. More

The planners of the ambitious Sarasota to Havana Regatta have scrapped their plans to glide 150 boats to Cuba in May after once-optimistic talks with federal officials fell flat. Because the U.S. Treasury Department did not provide the Sarasota Yacht Club with the needed permits to travel to the embargoed nation by a recent deadline, the sailors are scrambling to salvage the plans for a much smaller production.
