Heat wreaking havoc on golf courses nationwide
GCSAA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Prolonged periods of high temperatures, and in some cases, excessive rainfall, and high humidity have made life uncomfortable for golfers and golf courses alike, with Mother Nature holding all the cards for true relief. "The simple fact is the cool-season turfgrasses such as bentgrass, fescue, bluegrass, annual bluegrass and others are stressed when temperatures climb and humidity is high," Clark Throssell, Ph.D., director of research for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, said. "Golf courses in many parts of the country experience this every year, however what makes the situation so dire this year are the high levels of extended heat and humidity, and the sizeable part of the country affected." Golf courses changing with the times, technology to attract more paying customers
The Palm Beach Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The golfers of the next generation will still be playing Callaways or Pings, but also will use their iPhones to check their course's Facebook page or fire off a video to their teaching pro for a quick fix from the practice range. Nearby, a foursome of high-handicappers — one or two wearing Diesel jeans — will be on the first tee, looking to squeeze in a quick six (holes). This high-tech, laid-back scene would make some purists cringe. But it also might be the forward thinking golf needs at a time when the sport is slumping like everything else in these tough economic times. More

Why we need more par-three courses
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The golf industry is struggling, and many people in the game cite the same reasons: a round takes too long; the game is hard; maintenance budgets are through the roof; there are no places for beginners to play while they learn. One remedy: more short courses. For the experienced player, 18 holes on a par-three or "executive" course—a slightly longer version that usually includes a few par-fours of less than 300 yards—provide a great practice session under game conditions. Improving your game around the greens is the best way to cut five strokes from your score; two or three hours at a short course is more valuable than whaling away with your driver on the range. More

As spending by wealthy weakens, so does economy
The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wealthy Americans aren't spending so freely anymore. And the rest of us are feeling the squeeze. The question is whether the rich will cut back so much as to tip the economy back into recession — or if they will spend at least enough to sustain the recovery. The answer may not be clear for months. But their cutbacks help explain why the rebound could be stalling. The economy grew at just a 2.4 percent rate in the April-June quarter, the government said Friday, much slower than the 3.7 percent rate for the first quarter. More
