Clubs aim for hip clientele Miami Herald Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
This is not your grandparents' beach, country, surf or golf club. A new hotel and private membership club aimed at young creative types opens its doors this week with 750 members, a long waiting list — and an $1,800 annual price tag. Soho Beach House, the Miami Beach outpost of a brand that has locations in London, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles, slashes the cost to $900 a year for members under 27 — a hint that the desired demographic might still be paying off their college loans. The opening follows a summer when many private golf and country clubs — even the tony, exclusive Fisher Island Club — solicited summer members to boost their numbers in the slow months. More Golf's 'other' rules Golf Digest Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The main rules of golf are dependably immutable. You know the powers-that-be won't start allowing "hit till you're happy" off the first tee in competition or declare, "You know what? You can ground your club in a hazard from now on." Yet golf's other rules — its unofficial customs and etiquette — are in a state of constant evolution. More

More In tax cut plan, debate over the definition of rich The New York Times Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Much of the debate about whether to extend the Bush tax cuts has focused on big economic issues: how the decision might affect the fragile economy, the widening federal deficit and hiring by small businesses. As the political battle drags on, however, it has also veered into a more basic matter of fairness, whether a person who earns more than $200,000 a year should be taxed at rates similar to those who make $5 million.
