Health care reform: Changes to flexible spending arrangements
The Internal Revenue Service has issued guidance reflecting statutory changes regarding the use of certain tax-favored arrangements, such as flexible spending arrangements, to pay for over-the-counter medicines and drugs. Under the new standard, the cost of an over-the-counter medicine or drug cannot be reimbursed from the account unless a prescription is obtained. A similar rule goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2011, for Health Savings Accounts and Archer Medical Savings Accounts. More

Survival of the fittest
Golf Business Share
Ask most any course owner about money management and they'll likely say, "There isn't much money to manage." A deep recession, coupled with excess capacity, has triggered discounts and sapped pricing power. Customer-luring extras that once flourished have been trimmed or eliminated. Traditional dealings with lenders, vendors or both have given way to grim negotiations—or pure avoidance. A survivor mentality dominates, and it's focused on operational cost cutting and duct-tape fixes to stave off capital expenditures. More
Cove Cay Country Club in Clearwater, Fla., chooses to upgrade to stay vital
The St. Petersburg Times Share
Cove Cay Country Club was at a crossroads: Should it stick to the status quo and risk losing golfers and members, or should it bite the bullet and make costly renovations, hoping they would pay off in the long run. Lately, private and public courses have tried to do more with less. Average rounds per year are down most everywhere, which means courses have less money for maintenance and repairs. Despite the struggling economy, Cove Cay decided to gamble that new greens and tee boxes would eventually mean more golfers and revenue. More

Club's atmosphere is neighborly
The Item of Millburn and Short Hills Share
There is a quaint house at 60 Linden Street in Millburn, N.J. It looks like just another single family residence in a quiet part of town. However, the house is actually the Wyoming Club — which serves as a home away from home for many of the members. Founded in 1899, the group began with $3 annual dues for members. The articles of incorporation state that the purpose of the club is to provide for the recreation, comfort and enjoyment of the members and their families. More
States allowed to sue over health care reform
A U.S. District Court judge has ruled that 20 states can move forward with a lawsuit challenging the legality of the Obama administration's health-care reform legislation. The decision by Florida Northern District Judge Roger Vinson is not unexpected, as he told Justice Department officials that he would block efforts to have the lawsuit dismissed during a September hearing.
