Venerable US city club gets first woman president
Reuters
Share

Twenty five years ago she could not have joined the all-male club but now local businesswoman Joan Carter is the first female president of Philadelphia's venerable Union League. The move represents a turning point for the conservative club founded 148 years ago to promote the union cause in the Civil War, but also marks the continuation of a national trend of more women heading institutions previously dominated by men.

Developing a sense of belonging
Club & Resort Business
Share

With the recent recession putting unprecedented strain on even the most entrenched member relations, and intensifying the need to justify every club's value and expand its appeal, club managers have been challenged like never before to keep existing members from jumping ship, while at the same time finding, and bringing, new ones aboard. This has led to a flurry of new strategies and tactics for member development and member
relations that many managers had never been schooled in, trained for or had much experience with.

golf over with much more quickly?

Typically, the windswept fairways at Sagamore Hampton Golf Club are more a source of competitive frustration than admiration. Nestled high above the surrounding terrain and within earshot of I-95, a round at the 18-hole course can, on a particularly gusty day, feel like New Hampshire's version of the British Open. Now, thanks to a green ambition over two years in the making, the near 50-year-old Sagamore is making the most of
nature's hand.

Luxury spending is making a comeback
Los Angeles Times
Share

After snapping shut their designer wallets during the recession, luxury shoppers are making a big comeback. U.S. retail sales overall are expected to rise about 3.5 percent this year, but the trend is even stronger at the high end, with a projected 7 percent jump over 2009. That's an encouraging sign for the overall economy because affluent shoppers wield outsized spending power. The richest 20 percent of households account for
nearly 40 percent of total consumer spending in the U.S.
