The City of Adelanto, Calif., in San Bernardino County has moved forward in its plans to build a new 6,100-bed state correctional facility after the City Council approved a $55,700 contract with an environmental consultant to conduct studies on the land that would house the prison. The City is also negotiating with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to build the facility, which would feature two side-by-side buildings and would create an estimated 2,000 jobs in the region. The proposed site is in an industrial area near the current San Bernardino County Detention Center. More

Jacksonville, Fla.-based The Haskell Company has completed a $23 million Armed Forces Reserve Center in Muskogee, Okla., that will be designated a LEED® Silver Certified project by the U.S. Green Building Council. The 97,000-square-foot reserve center includes training areas, a drill floor, arms vaults, administrative areas, a kitchen and classrooms, all of which has been designed to house more than 450 National Guard members and Army Reserve soldiers. HGA Architects and Engineers has been awarded the contract to design a new, $58 million Student Success Center at East Los Angeles College, located in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park. The project was won through a design-build competition and contains 130,000 square-feet. The complex is striving to achieve Net Zero Energy and is on target for LEED Gold certification. Slated for completion in summer 2014, the design will consolidate nine school departments into a flexible learning environment, encouraging collaborative student-faculty interaction while incorporating sustainable strategies. Metrolinx and York Region in Canada announced the award of nearly $250 million for two design/build contracts for early construction work on York Viva Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) dedicated rapidway lanes, part of York Region's vivaNext rapid transit plan. "By continuing to make progress on delivering these important infrastructure projects, we strengthen the regional transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA)," said Metrolinx President and CEO Bruce McCuaig. "Transit projects like this help to connect the region and reinforce the important progress we are making on the Metrolinx regional transportation plan, which will provide more transportation choices, reduce congestion and will help transform travel in the GTHA." A public meeting with New Hampshire Department of Transportation officials concerning a proposed new design for a Memorial Bridge replacement is slated to take place in late February or early March, with rebuilding of the bridge still slated to begin in April 2012. New Hampshire DOT officials went back to the drawing board after area residents expressed concern late last year about plans to build a replica bridge. Residents had urged the DOT to come back with a more modern design - including options other than a lift span. More
