Morningstar Relatively Bullish on Highway Trust Fund and Road, Bridge Construction Through 2024
Associated General Contractors of New York State LLC
General consensus in the building industry predicts high-single-digit to low-double-digit growth for nonresidential construction over the next few years, but Kristoffer Inton, a basic materials analyst with Morningstar and Daniel Rohr, a director at the same company, disagree. The authors of “U.S. Nonresidential Construction Outlook: Spending Will Disappoint as Key Sectors Do More With Less” expect only a 2 percent increase in the annual real growth rate for the nonresidential sector over the next decade, below their estimate of a 2.25 percent real increase annually in gross domestic product.

U.S. Needs Hybrid Infrastructure Financing Approach
The Bond Buyer
Washington policy makers are lumbering toward a funding solution to address the massive backlog of U.S. infrastructure needs — a discussion likely to continue well into the next Presidential administration. Underlying this funding issue is an equally important debate focused on advancing a financing model — not to be confused with securing more funding — the proper resolution of which is critical to the prudent expenditure of whatever amount of additional revenue is forthcoming.
Differences between Engineer-Procure-Construct and Design-Build Delivery
(Please note that EPC projects are eligible to win DBIA’s National Design-Build Project/Team Awards). EPC (Engineer-Procure-Construct) and Design-Build have both existed as mainstream delivery methods for decades, but what’s the difference between the two? If anything, they seem to share critical similarities. In both cases, the owner has a single point of contact on the construction side. In both cases, the contractor is responsible for the design. In both cases, the contractor takes on more risk than a traditional design-bid-build delivery.
Builders Turn to "Greywater" at Construction Sites
Sacramento Business Journal
New mandates to cut water use already are being felt at construction sites. But many people may not notice. While residential building sites are still likely to have roaming trucks spraying water to reduce dust, it’s less likely they’re using potable water to do so. Barry Grant, Northern California division president for Meritage Homes, said many builders are trying to find sources of reclaimed water — also called "greywater" — instead.
Caterpillar Invests in, Adds Dealer Inventory to Yard Club, an Online Contractor-to-Contractor Equipment Rental Service
Most contractors outside of San Francisco have likely never heard of Yard Club. But thanks to an investment from and substantial partnership with Caterpillar, that’s about to change. Caterpillar announced that it has entered into an agreement that will greatly expand the startup equipment rental service, founded in 2013. Much in the same way as Material Tracker allows contractors to connect for purchasing or offloading materials, Yard Club is a peer-to-peer rental service that allows contractors to login and rent idle heavy equipment from one another.

Mortenson Construction Signs Contract to Build Shannon Wind Farm
Mortenson Construction's Wind Energy Group announced that it entered into a contract for construction of the Shannon Wind Project located near Windthorst, Texas, which is owned and managed by Alterra Power Corp. Vancouver-based Alterra acquired the project from Horn Wind, LLC, a north Texas wind developer that has successfully developed two other wind projects in the region - both constructed by Mortenson. This will be the second wind farm Mortenson will construct with Alterra following the completion of the Dokie Wind Project located in Chetwynd, British Columbia, in 2011.
Colorado State University Gets Guarantee on $220 million Price Tag for Stadium
The contractors who will build CSU's new on-campus stadium have guaranteed that it won't cost the university more than $220 million. Cost overruns, which stadium critics say are inevitable and could top $100 million, will be covered by the contractors involved and not the university — unless CSU were to "change the scope of the project" along the way, said Mike Harms, senior vice president for Icon Venue Group, the project manager for the stadium.

Leadership and Brunelleschi Award Nominations Open
DBIA is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Awards. The Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor DBIA bestows, and is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and the advancement of integrated design-build project delivery. Past winners include Craig Unger, DBIA; Michael C. Loulakis, Esq., DBIA; Dr. Robert Tener; and Walker Lee Evey.
The Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Awards are given to leaders who advocate for and promote the merits of Design-Build Done Right in six different categories: owner, industry professional, legislator, academic faculty, students and – for the first time this year – young professionals (age 35 or younger). In submitting nominations, specific attention should be focused on the nominee’s efforts and achievements in furthering the understanding and use of design-build as an effective and efficient delivery method, which will vary depending on the position they occupy within the industry.
Please send nomination forms for the 2015 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award and/or the Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Awards to DBIA by July 10, 2015. Questions? contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
