A new study analyzing the design-build project delivery method in the United States shows it was used on average in more than 40 percent of non-residential construction projects in 2010, a ten percent increase since 2005. The study was commissioned by the Design-Build Institute of America and was completed by RSMeans Reed Construction Data Market Intelligence. Work will begin this summer on a new road to connect Jefferson Avenue and Warwick Boulevard in central Newport News, Va. The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a $32 million design-build contract for the Glen Allen-based firm American Infrastructure to construct the four-lane roadway. Additional improvements will include turn lane and traffic light modifications at the Jefferson Avenue and Warwick Boulevard intersections, traffic light installation at Nat Turner and Nettles drives, landscape and street light enhancements, a sidewalk along the south side of the new roadway and a shared-use pathway along the north side, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation statement. The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) Board of Directors has approved the Authority's largest contract to date, for the design and construction of a storage and conveyance tunnel as part of the Clean Rivers Project. The Clean Rivers Project is a 20-year, $2.6 billion program to reduce combined-sewer runoff to the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek by 96 percent.
