How the design-build team on I-405 dodged 'Carmageddon' on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles
Engineering News Record (subscriber only) Share
Amid intense media attention, a design-build team on July 16 closed one of the most congested highway stretches in the country, demolished half an iconic bridge and reopened the 10-mile stretch to traffic 17 hours ahead of schedule - and earned a $300,000 bonus. The $1 billion Sepulveda Pass widening will add high-occupancy vehicle lanes to a stretch of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles. More

Los Angeles Mayor and Chairman of Metro Villaraigosa on Carmaheaven, Expo, 405 Subway
Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa has long been a friend to buses, trains, and bikes - and the people on them - and starting this month, he's exerting more power over everything transit-related by once again becoming Chairman of Metro's powerful board (he replaces outgoing Board Chairman, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe). Mayor talked to Curbed recently about the issues he hopes to take on - like getting that darn Expo Line finished and starting a bike share in the city. Curbed also asked him about that tricky Century City subway station and whether we'll ever have a train over the Sepulveda Pass. More
Senators, transportation advocates make the case for 2-year highway bill
The Hill Share
Lawmakers in the Senate and proponents of the chamber's approach to a new federal surface transportation bill made the case for a shorter bill that does more than a longer measure that locks in reduced spending. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee began debating the two-year, $109 billion proposal put forward by Chairwoman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., recently. Boxer said that was more preferable than the six-year, $230 billion measure that has emerged from the House GOP, even as she touted bipartisanship on the bill from Republicans on her committee. More
