When representatives from McGill Smith Punshon, Inc. and Duke Realty arrived at the DBIA-Ohio Valley Region awards banquet on Oct. 28 in Covington, Ky., they knew that their project was winning the DBIA award for Private Sector Building over $15 million. However, they were excited to discover that their project, the North Pointe at Union Center offices for G-E Aviation in West Chester, Ohio, was also awarded the Distinguished Design-Build Award, a special honor designated to projects who break new ground in the Design-Build industry. California port clears final financial hurdle for new bridge

Long Beach, Calif.'s, plan to build a new bridge to replace the Gerald Desmond between the port and Terminal Island cleared its final hurdle, and the search has begun for a firm to design and build the $950 million span. In addition to a final okay from the state Transportation Commission, the Port of Long Beach came home with the final $200 million in financing for the project, according to port Executive Director Richard Steinke. Route 460 toll could reach $11 in Virginia

Traveling the entire 55 miles of a new limited-access U.S. Route 460 in Virginia between Suffolk and Petersburg could cost between $5.50 and $11 one way. That's by car. For trucks, the toll could be as high as $22. The Virginia Department of Transportation has reviewed three conceptual proposals from companies to develop and operate a new U.S. Route 460. The design-build price ranges from $1.44 billion to $1.8 billion in current year figures. More

Southland Industries wins design-build competition

Southland Industries, as part of the Balfour Beatty/McCarthy Joint Venture Team, is designing and will also install the sustainable HVAC and plumbing systems, and remote central utility plant for the new Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center here, which is replacing the current 45-year-old existing hospital. The 947,000-sqare-foot hospital will incorporate the design and construction elements of a state-of-the-art hospital, providing health care to service members and their families. The design phase of the hospital will be completed over the next year, working in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and design team, and then construction will start with completion of the facility slated for May 2014. Justice restored: Iconic county building to get $244 million facelift

The Hall of Justice, a once gleaming Civic Center icon that has sat vacant for 16 years, is finally on the path to re-opening. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $244.2 million rehabilitation of the 1925 structure, which will once again house the Sheriff's Department, District Attorney and other county agencies when it reopens in 2014. This week, the five-member panel is expected to formally award a design/build contract to Clark Construction and architecture firm AC Martin Partners to oversee the project. More
