Oct. 18, 2012: Almost 365 days after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo first announced he would fast-track the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge, the state is poised to select a contractor and start construction. The Federal Highway Administration formally concluded the required environmental review on Sept. 25 and gave the state the green light to proceed with the estimated $5.2 billion project. More

Oct. 25, 2012: Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that the commonwealth has selected U.S. 460 Mobility Partners to finance, design and build a new 55-mile stretch of Route 460 in southeastern Virginia. The selection was made after a two-year procurement process involving detailed review and evaluation of private-sector proposals. Construction will be financed through a combination of public dollars and tolls. The existing Route 460 remains free. More

July 19, 2012: Bill Kneeland writes, "Design-build projects represent a growing opportunity for companies that have sufficient experience to prepare design-build bid documents, providing they understand the correct process of how to protect the bid dollar amount. Too often, the conditions and assumptions contained in bids are incomplete, causing subcontractors to revise their original bid dollar amount upwards. This creates unfavorable issues with the GC, CM, or A/E." More

Fort Irwin, Calif., to build $400 million hospital

Jan. 19, 2012: Fort Irwin, Calif., expects to break ground this summer on a new $400 million hospital, which will replace the post's current 40-year-old facility. Construction on the 216,000-square-foot hospital should begin in June and wrap up by summer 2015, according to Col. Michael Kiefer, Fort Irwin's Medical Department Activity commander. More
