Oil boom gives the US a new edge in energy and diplomacy

A substantial rise in oil prices in recent months has led to a resurgence in American oil production, enabling the country to challenge the dominance of Saudi Arabia and dampen price pressures at the pump. The success has come in the face of efforts by Saudi Arabia and its oil allies to undercut the shale drilling spree in the United States. Those strategies backfired and ultimately ended up benefiting the oil industry.
Britain will probably see a higher risks of blackouts after Brexit
Britain probably will risk more energy supply shortages after leaving the European Union, a panel of lawmakers from the House of Lords said, adding to pressure on the government to bring forward measures that protect consumers from higher costs.
Supreme Court rules against Trump administration on Clean Water rule
In a hit to the Trump administration, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled Jan. 22 that cases litigating the Clean Water Act should be heard by federal district courts. The administration had argued those cases should be heard in federal appeals courts.
Oklahoma Attorney General asks FERC to require energy wholesalers to return tax breaks to customers
Oklahoma's Attorney General continues to seek tax breaks for the state's utility customers. On Jan. 25, Attorney General Mike Hunter's office announced he sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission urging it to require energy wholesalers to reduce the rates they charge for the electricity and natural gas they transport across the nation.
Wind energy industry delivered blow in Maine

Gov. Paul LePage imposed a moratorium on new wind energy projects in western and coastal Maine on Jan. 24 while establishing a secretive commission to study how wind turbines impact the state's tourism economy. LePage, a long-time critic of wind energy, issued an executive order prohibiting state agencies from issuing permits "related to wind turbines" in western and coastal Maine, on coastal islands and along "significant avian migratory pathways."

EBA, FELJ and CFEBA are Seeking Board Nominations
EBA's Committee on Nominations is seeking nominations to fill officer and director positions on EBA’s Board of Directors as well as potential candidates to serve as directors of EBA’s affiliated Foundation of the Energy Law Journal (FELJ) and Charitable Foundation of the Energy Bar Association (CFEBA). Officers and directors of the FELJ and CFEBA boards are appointed by the incoming EBA president and ratified by the EBA Board, but your recommendations are helpful in identifying interested and qualified candidates. The election to fill these positions will occur at EBA’s Annual Meeting on May 8, 2018.

Capacity Audience Enjoys Oil Pipeline Regulations Primer and Networking
FERC regulators and other experts conducted an in-depth analysis of statutes and regulations governing the oil pipeline industry at an EBA Primer in The Woodlands, Texas last week. Following the two-day course, the Houston Chapter hosted former FERC Commissioner Colette Honorable at a networking reception. Honorable discussed FERC new commissioner appointments and its recent ruling on DOE's NOPR.
Ethical Considerations for FERC, February 15
An all-star cast of experts will explore how FERC addresses ethics challenges from ex parte communications to the Model Protective Order to practices before and during hearings at FERC. Moderated by Daniel Nugent of FERC's Office of Administrative Litigation, panelists will include Carmen Cintron, FERC's Chief Administrative Law Judge Carmen Cintron, John Kroeger, Director of FERC's Office of Administrative Litigation, and William Keyser, a Partner at K&L Gates. CFEBA: Light & Hope for Puerto Rico!
Save the date for the Charitable Foundation of the Energy Bar Association’s 2018 Fundraising Gala, Light & Hope for Puerto Rico to be held on May 7, 2018 at the Renaissance Washington DC, immediately following the first day of the EBA Annual Meeting and Conference. This year, in partnership with the Puerto Rico Primary Care Association (PCA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, CFEBA has the special opportunity to help provide solar panels, inverters, and battery systems to 15 to 20 primary health care centers located throughout Puerto Rico. Nearly half of the permanent health care centers in Puerto Rico still remain without grid power or are operating on diesel generators. This project will address refrigeration needs for perishable medication such as insulin, vaccines, and certain liquid antibiotics, which all require proper temperature storage conditions to work as intended and to not pose risk to the health of the person receiving medicine.
