    INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS

Natural gas glut in Appalachia keeps pushing prices downward
    Trib Live
Lower gas prices and a production glut in Appalachia aren't deterring the biggest drillers in the Marcellus shale. Companies continue to report surging production in their quarterly statements, and several are forecasting growth into next year. Production is growing because drillers are finding more efficient ways to extract gas from shale formations.

The fight over solar moves from net metering to rate design
    Utility Dive
Fights over electricity rates are brewing all across the country. Utilities say new rate proposals will protect customers who haven't moved to solar and energy efficiency. But those who have moved say the proposals only protect utilities. "There are two categories of rate restructuring and rate design changes bubbling up," explained Environmental Law & Policy Center Sr. Attorney Brad Klein.

The wind farm of the future might be underwater
    The Atlantic
Off the coast of Scotland, in the choppy sound between Caithness and the Orkney Islands, you can find some of the fastest-flowing marine waters in the world. The tides of the Pentland Firth can churn at rates of up to 18 miles per hour. Rough waters also mean energetic waters; the Pentland Firth, some believe, may help to generate enough energy to power a third of Scotland.

There's a silver lining for the oil industry in lower crude prices
Houston Chronicle via San Antonio Express-News
The quickest way to ruin a barbecue chicken is to let the fire get too hot. The same is true in business, and until a few weeks ago, nothing had been hotter than oil this year. High crude oil prices certainly have fueled innovation and economic growth over the last four years. But allow me for a moment to sing the praises of the 25 percent pullback that has dropped prices to two-year lows.
