Knock on wood: Demand for timber products grows as |
Growing demand for housing has made the timber industry cautiously optimistic: As more homes are built, the outlook for forest products has improved. Todd Morgan of the Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research told the Great Falls Tribune that timber prices have risen during the housing recovery and are expected to continue moving upward as the sector bounces back from "hitting rock bottom" in 2008 and 2009.

CT scanning shows why tilting trees produce better biofuel

Imperial researchers have used medical imaging techniques to explore why making willow trees grow at an angle (tilted trees) can vastly improve their biofuel yields. Using micro-CT scans, the team showed that the trees respond to being tilted by producing a sugar-rich, gelatinous fiber, which helps them stay upright.

Researchers used an advanced proteomic techniques to identify 1,750 unique proteins in shoots of switchgrass, a native prairie grass viewed as one of the most promising of all the plants that could be used to produce advanced biofuels.
Biomass module reduces plant carbon dioxide emissions 85 percent
MARG Energy, which converts carbon dioxide emissions into algae that can then be used by the fuel, food and pharmaceutical industries, says its technology can help power plants, smokestacks, businesses and schools reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 85 percent. The company says the U.S. algae marketplace is estimated at $400 billion, and $12 trillion globally.

Loss of federal timber payments hit Idaho harder than most states

Idaho is among five U.S. states losing the largest amount of federal timber payments aimed at rural counties and school districts. Congress let the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act expire in the fall of 2014, leaving Idaho counties and school districts with $26 million less than expected.
Uruguay seeks Finnish investment in timber industry
Timber and furniture industry representatives from Finland are visiting Uruguay this week, exploring investments to expand the sector in the South American country. The visit is part of the Uruguay-Finland 2015 Timber and Furniture Forum organized by the Foreign Ministry with support from the Uruguay XXI Investment and Export Promotion Institute.
Summer cottage is prefabbed out of cross-laminated timber
Cross-laminated timber, or CLT, makes so much sense these days. Trees are renewable; wood construction sequesters carbon for the life of the building. CLT also is a form of flatpack prefab, where the sheets are cut to size at the factory and shipped on a flatbed, then assembled like a house of cards. Kariouk Associates of Ottawa, Canada, designed a three-season cottage by a lake in Quebec for a family from Manhattan, New York. It replaces an existing cottage of the same size that was in "an advanced state of decay."
