I have a theory that for writers, digital writing tools are just as influential as the mason's choice of a particular compass or square.
Historian Lon Shelby wrote extensively about the building practices of the medieval masons behind the creation of such cathedrals as Chartres, iconic buildings that owe their creation and execution to the specific tools masons adopted for measurement and layout.

Our brains are hardwired to make much of modern life difficult. This is especially true when it comes to dealing with uncertainty. On the bright side, if you know the right tricks, you can override your brain's irrational tendencies and handle uncertainty effectively.
Our brains give us fits when facing uncertainty because they're wired to react to it with fear. In a recent study, a Caltech neuroeconomist imaged subjects' brains as they were forced to make increasingly uncertain bets.

A sizable amount of publishers were removed from Google News without warning late Sunday, the result of what the tech company is calling an unintentional glitch.
"Our news website was removed from Google News and our team is depressed," one publisher wrote on Google's Help Forum. "Help." "I have been a Google News source for 10 years," another wrote. "This afternoon, all of a sudden, my posts stopped going into Google News."

Internet advertising firms are losing hundreds of millions of dollars following the introduction of a new privacy feature from Apple that prevents users from being tracked around the web.
Advertising technology firm Criteo, one of the largest in the industry, says that the Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature for Safari, which holds 15% of the global browser market, is likely to cut its 2018 revenue by more than a fifth compared to projections made before ITP was announced.

The Bookseller
Innovation in publishing — at least of the core product, the book — has been slow, minimal and incremental. Yet at every turning point it has been met with sometimes hysterical, often reactionary, zeal.
The introduction of the printing press, the paperback revolution and latterly the introduction of the e-book are three key changes we've witnessed over the last several centuries, and none have done an awful lot in reality to change the basics of what we understand to be a book.

In the coming year, Facebook will likely split the news feed. Non-promoted posts from Facebook pages will be placed in a secondary feed. When the company tested the format in Slovakia in 2017, Facebook pages saw two-thirds to three-quarters of their reach disappear. Pages in Slovakia and two other test markets — Serbia and Sri Lanka — reported a drop in Facebook engagement of 60 to 80 percent.

The McDonald’s Twitter account hit a major bump in the road as it closed out 2017. On Black Friday, the fast food giant presumably wanted to tweet out a promo deal to shoppers but instead tweeted this: "Black Friday ****Need copy and link****."
How does this sort of social media blunder happen at such a large and successful organization? Even with sophisticated software and multiple departments involved, companies still manage to miss obvious mistakes.

Today's teens and tweens have built up an impressive amount of daily screen time. Figures put it at between six to eight hours a day for 11-15 year-olds, and that's not including time spent on a computer for homework. In fact, even the average U.K. adult spends more time looking at a screen than they do sleeping, according to one analysis. It starts early. A third of U.K. children have access to a tablet before they are 4.

PlantLink charmed me when I reviewed it more than three years ago. It was a simple sensor that stuck in the dirt near your plant and reliably kept track of the soil moisture so you knew when to water. Blossom was an irrigation controller similar to Rachio that monitored the weather and helped you avoid watering when rain was imminent. Both have been resurrected and rebranded as part of Scott's new all-encompassing Gro line at CES.
