Being a writer means that you'll never have a shortage of criticism, whether it is offered up to you in heaping scoops of vitriol from faceless masses on the internet, or you gather it yourself from your never ending well of neurotic self-doubt. Hooray. Add "being a woman" into the equation and your cup overfloweth. Fortunately, we writers are rational beings and so we give as much credence to positive comments as we do negative ones. JUST KIDDING.

As writers, words are our friends. Our best times are when they flow from us with beauty or power. They can sometimes trip us up, too, though, when we overthink them. A thesaurus can be very helpful when you're stuck for a good word, or when you want to avoid using the same word excessively in the same paragraph. It can sometimes take a nasty while to create a sentence when there's only one word available that you can think of to convey what you want to say or project.

Lots of newsworthy things happen in East Palo Alto, California, a city of nearly 30,000 located in the heart of Silicon Valley. It's just that many of them don't make the local news.
Last fall, for example, voters went to the polls to elect a new city council and to weigh in on three ballot measures, including two that would raise local taxes. The issues were "critical" to the city's immediate future, Mayor Larry Moody said. But without even a weekly newspaper in town, it was hard to find out.

Hearst's Kate Lewis can easily rattle off the company's Instagram stats. Half the company's brands have more than 1 million followers. Harper's Bazaar has 3 million. But when it comes to their brand's Snapchat handles outside of the Discover section, Lewis, Hearst's svp and editorial director of digital media, hesitates. "Our Discover following is enormous, but our Snapchat handle following is not as big as Instagram. I don't know the number of followers of [the accounts]."

In recent days, I've gotten to know beekeepers in Rhode Island, dental hygienists in New Jersey and Wiccans in Tennessee. I've seen gardeners swapping fertilizer advice, flight attendants complaining about annoying passengers and fishermen arguing about which lures are best for catching muskies. I now know that there are hundreds of people who love creating memes about "The Sopranos," and thousands who believe, with total conviction, that the Earth is flat.

When our cherry tomatoes blush red each summer, my son eagerly plucks them from the vine and pops them in his mouth. He points at random plants and proudly declares, "That one's mine!" And occasionally, he yells in panic as the hose from the rain barrel overflows his tiny watering can.
Admittedly, gardening with kids isn't always idyllic.
But even when it's chaotic, it can be tremendously beneficial.

What happens when we run out of time?
This might sound like a philosophical question, but with the explosion in content and entertainment offerings such as social media and freemium games, we are rapidly approaching a state of peak attention. I define peak attention as the moment where the competition for our attention reaches a saturated point — when there is no more time to spare and something else must miss out.

When it comes to virtual reality, few publishers are as committed as The New York Times, with its dedicated VR app and Daily 360 feature, helped by funding from tech giants Samsung and Google. All told, the Times produces one six- to 10-minute VR film a month and one one- to two-minute 360 video per day, showcasing curiosities like the inside of a fireworks factory and far-flung places. It's finding people are watching the longer videos to the end.
