Convention Data Services Appoints Kimball as President and CEO, Levinson Becomes Chairman of the Board

Convention Data Services has appointed Doug Levinson as chairman of the board and selected John Kimball as president and CEO. Levinson will be stepping into the role of chairman of the board effective 1 January 2012. He will be available to the CDS executive staff as an advisor, and participate in quarterly board meetings. Levinson will relinquish the running of the day-to-day operations of the company to John Kimball, who will take over as president and CEO also effective 1 January 2012. More

Anaheim Convention Center to Expand Outdoor Event Space

The Anaheim Convention Center will increase its event space by 100,000 square feet with a new outdoor plaza that will be completed 2012. The Grand Plaza project does not include any dedicated indoor exhibit space, but it greatly will overhaul and increase the outdoor multifunction area that is available year-round. More

Reed Travel Exhibitions says 70 exhibitors have rebooked for AIBTM 2012. The Americas Meetings and Events Exhibition is due to take place 19-21 June 2012 at the Baltimore Convention Center, U.S. AIBTM's Project Director Steve Knight said: "Our first event this year marked a new era for the meetings industry in the U.S. The feedback from both suppliers and buyers has been amazing and proved that the business environment was right, and early bookings show that our exhibitors want to come back for more." GLM to be Acquired by Providence Equity Partners

George Little Management ( and Providence Equity Partners ( on 23 August announced that GLM and Providence have signed a definitive agreement under which Providence will acquire GLM from Daily Mail and General Trust plc for approximately $173 million in cash. Currently, GLM produces 15 trade shows, serving industries as diverse as giftware, home furnishings, social stationery, home textiles, tabletop, gourmet housewares, contemporary furniture, personal care, art and design, antique jewelry, beach, board sports, fashion and hospitality. Annually, these events showcase approximately 11,000 exhibitors in 1.8 million net square feet of exhibit space, and attract approximately 150,000 attendees. More

Recent remarks by Vice President Joe Biden highlighted the barriers Chinese citizens face with the U.S. visa system, stating they were "not in our interest" and that the U.S. should "make it easier for Chinese ... to travel to the United States." The vice president's comments echo calls by the U.S. Travel Association and other business and travel leaders to reform the U.S. visa system, which would result in additional business and leisure travelers to the U.S. and create more than one million U.S. jobs. At an 19 August U.S.-China Business Roundtable attended with Chinese Vice President Xi, Biden said: "I would also like to point out that we have made much progress, but there are some real and perceived barriers that exist in both countries that have to be dealt with." IMEX America is organizing an Association Day on the day prior to the show, which will maximize subsequent attendance at the show from this important market segment.
