The past few years there have been numerous senior U.S. government officials in the national security and cyber space depart for opportunities within the private sector. This is not surprising since prior to presidential elections there's a mass exodus and numerous transitions. However, what is unique is that instead of joining government contractors, nearly all of them have chosen either large public companies, innovative privately held companies, or are consulting/advising these companies.

The plastic explosive was molded into a thin sheet and hidden inside a laptop, the kind of hard-to-detect bomb that keeps airport security chiefs awake at night. Terrorist devices such as this are the reason fliers have to remove laptops from carry-on bags at security checkpoints before boarding airplanes. But at a lab in an industrial park outside Boston, a new generation scanner spotted the mock "bomb" hidden in a suitcase within seconds, alerting test screeners by turning its image magenta on a computer.

When most healthcare workers head into their jobs, the threat of violence is usually not a major concern. It was not really on my radar when I went to work one night in the emergency department of a busy New York City hospital. Sure, we saw some upset patients and family, but that is just par for the course when working in the ED. Imagine a security camera that can understand and analyze the scene it's capturing. The camera can spot someone who is leaving a piece of luggage behind at an airport and issue an alert. It can identify a car being sought in connection with a crime based on its color, shape, and dented left bumper, even if the license plate has been covered up. And it can spot drivers who are texting when they should be watching the road, potentially passing on this information to law enforcement officials that can then issue a ticket.

The voice that saved a life, but was not recognized. The unseen hero who is the life line of all officers. Telecommunicators keep everyone safe by their quick thinking and communicating ability. I never realized the complexity of the telecommunicator profession until recently. The dispatchers are the forgotten heroes who deal with life-and-death situations daily and succumb to the same physical and mental issues of a line officer, but they do not get the benefit of closure.

The recent DDoS attacks launched from IoT devices demonstrate that the internet of things spans all parts of IT and that most companies deploying it still need a lot of help.
That's the message from ARM, the chip design company behind nearly every smartphone and a big chunk of IoT, at its annual TechCon event this week in Silicon Valley.
Small, low-power devices like sensors and security cameras are the most visible part of IoT, and they're right in ARM's wheelhouse as the dominant force in low-power chips.

Will corporate spending on cybersecurity insurance siphon away budget dollars from security technology?
Insurance companies led by American International Group, Chubb, Beazley and Axis Capital are eyeing the cybersecurity market. Security providers such as Cisco Systems, IBM, Palo Alto Networks and Check Point Software are paying attention.
