Toxic update — Preparing for ICIM Nashville's lecture 'Toxicity in Built Spaces'
Knowledge of chemicals is limited
There are more than 80,000 chemicals in the United States cataloged by government regulators and the health risks of most of them are unknown. This became glaringly obvious when, on Jan. 9, a clear, licorice-smelling chemical leaked from an old storage tank into the Elk River in West Virginia, contaminating the drinking water for a big chunk of the state, including the capital, before making its way down the Ohio River.

Book review: Out of the Woods — Healing from Lyme Disease and other Chronic Illness by Katina I. Makris
Two experts in Lyme disease will be sharing a lecture in Nashville; Steve Fry, MD and Leila Zackrison, MD. They will combine laboratory and clinical understandings for a comprehensive overview.
When a healer and a healthcare columnist spends several years completely baffled and in absolute torment, chances are that her mysterious flu-like illness is something that is truly difficult to diagnose. It took Katina Makris five years to receive a correct diagnosis and a long time to even partially recover from it. Her journey is described beautifully in Out of the Woods, which encompasses both her memoirs and an eye-opening "Nuts and Bolts" section on signs, symptoms and available treatments for Lyme disease.

Eating healthy veggies as a part of your winter training
If you are anything like us you love all the wonderful fruits and vegetables that go along with summer. Many people find it easier to eat healthy in the warm weather months; the fruits and veggies are so fresh and abundant. Most people crave "comfort foods" and are bombarded by sweets from the holidays in the colder months, let alone it is harder to get out an exercise during the colder months, which can all lead to the dreaded winter weight gain.

More provinces protecting MDs who practice alternative medicine
The number of provinces with laws protecting physicians who practice alternative forms of medicine is growing. Alberta, Ontario, and, most recently, British Columbia have now passed legislation designed to protect these physicians from disciplinary action solely because they offer these therapies.
Comparing the metal concentration in the hair of cancer patients and healthy people living in the Malwa Region of Punjab, India
The cancer prevalence in the Malwa region of Punjab is much higher than the national average cancer prevalence in India. The participants in the present study were 50 healthy individuals and 49 cancer patients all living in the Malwa region of Punjab, with the healthy people being selected from the same household as the cancer patients. The present study indicates that metals — and especially U — may be a factor in the development of breast cancer among Punjabi women.
Healing with language: Positive intent
People, including your patients or clients, can believe a lot of strange things. Some of the strange things they believe might preclude using complementary or integrative approaches to solving their health problems. They might truly believe that pharmaceutical products or surgery would be their best bet, or their only options, for maintaining or regaining their health. It is difficult — and perhaps impossible — to change firmly held beliefs directly, as people often refuse to be persuaded by the facts. In such cases, an indirect approach is best.
