Researchers at the University of Burgos in Spain have developed a portable and inexpensive new method of detecting levels of mercury in water. The simple test uses a sheet that changes color when inserted into mercury contaminated water, with results visible to the naked eye.

The debate over the safety of calcium supplements has been muddied with the publication of a new analysis showing that a high intake of supplemental calcium increases the risk of cardiovascular disease death in men but not in women. Compared with individuals who took no calcium, men who consumed 1000 mg or more of supplemental calcium per day had a significant 20 percent increased risk of CVD death, a risk that was driven by a significant 19 percent increased risk of heart-disease death.

A recent study suggests that children who eat fast food frequently may have a higher chance of developing asthma or allergies. Data analysis showed that consuming fast food three times or more weekly was associated with severe asthma, severe allergies and severe eczema.
