Paradox & Controversy: Infections, Cancer Management, and Energy Medicine
Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2015

ICIM is a medical association of physicians dedicated to exploring and teaching integrative treatments to help our patients. Our 60th meeting is coming up Oct. 30-Nov. 1 in Chicago. This newsletter is designed to prepare attendees and continue discussions of the education we provide.

It's easier than ever to like chelation therapy
In 2013, Dr. Chappell called for a Summit on New Directions for Chelation Therapy. At this exciting gathering, we identified an urgent need for better chelation PR. We need to reach out to new patients, focus on the positive evidence of chelation, and direct attention away from unfair attacks in the media. In response, ICIM created a social media and website portfolio to raise the positive awareness of chelation. We encourage you to join the discussion and share the information widely.

By ICIM member Terry Chappell MD: ADHD is often missed in adults
A presentation at the European College of Neuropsychopharmocology showed that 15.8 percent of nonpsychotic outpatients had adult ADHD that had not been previously diagnosed. Medication can be helpful, but Dr. Johannes Thome, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the the University of Rostock in Germany stressed that "pills don't give you skills." He emphasized that psychological therapies are important as well. Those of us in integrative medicine would also look for yeast imbalance, food allergies, B12 responders, toxic metals, low dose naltrexone, homeopathics and other treatment options that have been successful in children with ADHD.

Suggested by ICIM member Chuck Adams MD: Dangerous heavy metals in popular chocolates
Everyday Health
As You Sow, a consumer health protection organization, conducted independent testing on 42 chocolate products, and the results are shocking: 26 popular chocolate products from companies like Godiva, Hershey, and Whole Foods have been deemed worthy of a warning label to alert consumers of the presence of dangerous heavy metals. In fact, just one serving of these chocolates exceeds the California state harbor level for reproductive harm.

Optimal Health Is Yours
Using the anti-pathogenic properties of more than one botanical in a combination or formula provides a broader spectrum of activity against infection. The resulting formulations, which I have dubbed "Biocidal combinations," are powerful allies that may be used in the treatment of infection. The addition of ingredients used for immune support, anti-inflammatory botanicals and those which assist the drainage pathways of the liver and kidneys increase the overall effectiveness in promoting a healing response.

By ICIM member Joel P. Bowman PhD: My favorite NLP technique
Richard Bandler described what has become known as "The Fast Phobia Cure" in his 1985 book, "Using Your Brain for a Change." It is my favorite NLP technique because it is quick, easy for both practitioner and client, and effective. If that were the only technique you knew, you could help all your friends and relatives with anxieties, phobias, and even post traumatic stress disorder greatly reduce or completely eliminate those unpleasant feelings.

ICIM Book of the Week

'The Truth About the Drug Companies '
During her two decades at The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marcia Angell had a front-row seat on the appalling spectacle of the pharmaceutical industry. She watched drug companies stray from their original mission of discovering and manufacturing useful drugs and instead become vast marketing machines with unprecedented control over their own fortunes. She saw them gain nearly limitless influence over medical research, education, and how doctors do their jobs. She sympathized as the American public, particularly the elderly, struggled and increasingly failed to meet spiraling prescription drug prices. Now, in this bold, hard-hitting new book, Angell exposes the shocking truth of what the pharmaceutical industry has become and argues for essential, long-overdue change.

ICIM Lecture

By ICIM member Ron Hunninghake MD: Tired? Could it be your thyroid?
A quick Internet search for the causes of fatigue almost always brings up low thyroid. A trip to the doctor with this information in hand generally results in the following lab test: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. All too often, to the surprise and disappointment of the patient, the word comes back: "Your thyroid is normal." But is it?

Go deep, then wide: Building integrative health practices
FON Therapeutics
Contrary to this article's title, entrepreneurs and business managers naturally do the exact opposite: focusing widely but not deeply enough. That's a productivity killer. Let me explain.
