Nationalizing expert review panels: Could professional organizations determine 'standard of care'?
Medical Justice
An interesting new bill has been drafted. In a sign of bipartisan détente, the bill is sponsored by Congressman Andy Barr, R-KY, and Dr. Ami Bera, D-CA. Quoting from the summary of the Saving Lives, Saving Costs Act (H.R. 4106): This legislation allows doctors to focus on practicing medicine and improves the quality of patient care by encouraging the use of evidence-based guidelines. Physicians who can demonstrate they followed the recommended best practices will benefit from increased liability protection in the form of a legal safe harbor. The safe harbor would allow physicians the right of removal to federal court and of alternative dispute resolution with an independent review panel of experts. If the panel finds the defendant was compliant with the standard of care, the plaintiff would be required to meet a heightened burden of proof if the plaintiff decides to proceed with the case. By reducing the necessary practice of defensive medicine and increasing adherence to evidence-based medicine this legislation has the potential to help lower healthcare costs.

By ICIM member Su Fairchild MD: B12 deficiency
The Integrative Medicine Blog
Our bodies can typically store enough B12 in the liver for three to four years, so deficiencies caused by dietary changes, inadequate intake or other factors, can sometimes take a long time to manifest if one starts out topped off.

From the blog of ICIM member S. Cornelia Franz MD: Sleep 'cleans' the brain of toxins
BBC
The United States team believe the "waste removal system" is one of the fundamental reasons for sleep. Their study, in the journal Science, showed brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean. They also suggest that failing to clear away some toxic proteins may play a role in brain disorders.

Shared by our friend Jake Wardwell DO on Facebook: One twin exercises, the other doesn't
The New York Times
Identical twins in Finland who shared the same sports and other physical activities as youngsters but different exercise habits as adults soon developed quite different bodies and brains, according to a fascinating new study that highlights the extent to which exercise shapes our health, even in people who have identical genes and nurturing.

Pros and Cons

Physician and clinician sales of dietary supplements: Legal view
FON Therapeutics
Sales of dietary supplements by physicians, acupuncturists, chiropractors and other licensed professionals raise thorny legal issues. This can be confusing, because on one hand, "everybody does it" — i.e., sales of dietary supplements by clinicians such as medical doctors, is widespread in the industry. On the other hand, the American Medical Association actively discourages the practice through its ethics opinions, which explicitly prohibit such conflicts of interest between care for the patient, and the doctor's financial self-interest.

ICIM Lecture

By ICIM member Jorge Flechas MD: Whole body iodine sufficiency
YouTube
The human body can hold up to a total of 1500 milligrams of iodine. Of this amount, the thyroid gland holds up to 50 mg. Twenty percent of total body iodine sits in the skin, 32 percent is in the muscles and 35 percent is in the fat. Iodine supports many bodily functions other than being carried around by thyroid hormone. In the current medical literature there is much debate on iodine and autoimmune problems. This topic warrants further discussion with a look at the broader role of iodine for total body health.

'Racketeering in Medicine: The Suppression of Alternatives'
Healing with Nutrition
In Dr. Carter's own words, "This book will tell you the true story about the frightening power mongers who have orchestrated financially- motivated cover ups." "Racketeering in Medicine" contains so many chilling stories about just how the aims of the participants in this conspiracy have harmed doctors and patients alike. The book's appendix lists many important resources, both medical and advocacy.

Political update from the Alliance for Natural Health

New power grab by Federation of State Medical Boards threatens integrative medicine
Alliance for Natural Health
The FSMB — a private trade association that sets standards which are often followed by state medical boards — has historically been no friend to integrative medicine. Despite having no public funding, transparency or accountability, FSMB wields a tremendous amount of power over the practice of medicine in all 50 states. The organization has demonstrated its antipathy toward natural health since the mid-1990s when it discussed altering the definition of health fraud to include alternative medical care. It would appear that FSMB considers innovative approaches to healthcare to be nothing more than exercises in "quackery."
