By ICIM 'End Pain' speaker Guy Chamberland MSc, PhD:
What to take when having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep?
There are several good choices available to you to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Before taking any one of them you should verify with a healthcare professional to ensure that the product is right for you if you are taking medications or having a medical condition other than the insomnia. Natural sleep aids work on the same targets that drugs do so you should never take them while taking a prescription or OTC drug sleep aid. Always consult a pharmacist or you heathcare practitioner before taking.

Intravenous vitamin C in the treatment of shingles — Results of a multicenter prospective cohort study
PubMed.gov via Center for the Healing Arts
Vitamin C is an immune-relevant micronutrient, which is depleted in viral infections and this deficiency seems to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of herpes infections and in the development of postherpetic neuralgia. The objective of this observational multicenter study was to evaluate the utilization, safety and efficacy of intravenously administrated vitamin C in patients with shingles.

Breaking the cycle of chronic pain
Modern Healthcare Professional
Pain is considered chronic when it lasts for weeks, months and even years. Etiologies include trauma and conditions such as arthritis, cancer, infection, degenerative disc disease and neuropathies. Common complaints are headaches, low back pain, arthritis and neurogenic pain — pain that results from damaged central nervous system or peripheral nerves.
Speaker book of the week:
Pain pain go away — Free yourself from chronic pain
Information that you find here is different. It has no prescriptions or over-the-counter remedies to pitch. Instead, the message is intended to shorten the communication gap for people victimized by chronic joint pain. The subject of this book's discussion — reconstructive therapy/prolotherapy — effectively treats nearly all tendon, ligament and joint problems by permanently strengthening injured areas. The main side effect of tendon, ligament and joint reconstruction is the elimination of pain. Our text dedicates itself to enlightening those who have vested interests in knowing more: pain sufferers, primary caregivers and physicians.

Drugs aim to help elderly rebuild muscle
The Wall Street Journal
Elle Campbell writes, "This is so timely. Recently, I was at the Age Management Medical conference in Orlando learning the biochemistry of how myostatin inhibitors work. Our presenters were Dr. R. Hariri from Mt. Sinai and Dr. L. Arrone from Columbia. This brilliant work is very fascinating and seems to hold real promise for treating sarcopenia, obesity and diabetes. Of course, I am in favor of supplements instead of drugs but tweaking the myostatin molecule seems to have profound impact on body composition and subsequent ability to burn glucose more efficiently. Stay tuned. This story will get bigger."
By ICIM member Paige Adams, FNP about ICIM's Nashville speaker Jeff Bradstreet, MD:
My dear friend, Dr. Bradstreet's interesting stance on 23andme, gene apps and SNPs
My dear friend Dr. Bradstreet's interesting stance on 23andme, gene apps and SNP information. He readily admits there are many genetic SNPs he isn't familiar with, so it will be interesting to see his post on the list of SNPs he finds most valuable.

Effect of Tai Chi on physical function, fall rates and quality of life among older stroke survivors
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
A study was conducted to examine the effect of a 12-week Tai Chi (TC) intervention on physical function and quality of life. Data showed that TC and strength and range of movement exercises led to improved aerobic endurance (SS) and both are suitable community-based programs that may aid in stroke recovery and community reintegration. Our data suggest that a 12-week TC intervention was more effective in reducing fall rates than SS or usual care (UC) interventions. Future studies examining the effectiveness of TC as a fall prevention strategy for community-dwelling survivors of stroke are recommended.
