Cancer: Paradox and controversy in Chicago next fall
ICIM
The study of cancer is crucial. Cancer is the end result of disease. Cancer represents the body's demise and the ever frustrating and failed crusade to conquer it. Our fall meeting "Energy and Medicine" will take on the Emperor of all Maladies from a perspective that is rarely seen. Each lecture at the meeting will be using cancer as a lens — an example — to help demonstrate how the energetic system affects the physical.

An integrative oncology patient's thoughts on 'Cancer: Emperor of All Maladies'
FON Consulting
As a 24-year cancer survivor, I watched "Cancer: Emperor of All Maladies" with mixed emotions. From this patient's perspective, the film is all about the "tumor" and treats the host — aka the patient — as almost an irrelevant, disconnected entity.

'Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies'
PBS
This title matches the epic scale of the disease, reshaping the way the public sees cancer and stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded it. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism and misperception.

By ICIM member Cathie Ann Lippman MD: Cancer: Is there nothing we can do? Wrong!
People often ask with great concern about scientific studies that suggest taking supplements increases their risk of getting cancer. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of cancer seems to carry a death sentence for a person, although this is not true. While the "war against cancer" certainly has not been won, in some instances progress has been made in terms of treatment. The issue here is really how to prevent it in the first place.

By ICIM member Marina Johnson MD: 'Relative Risks for Breast Cancer,' or chocolate and menopause? Here's the rest of the story
The following slide on "Relative Risks for Breast Cancer" lists the reported increases in relative risks associated not only with HRT and ERT (estrogen alone) but also with birth weight, fish intake, eating one additional serving of French fries per week during preschool years, eating grapefruit, working on a night shift, working as an airline fight attendant in two different airlines, suffering from severe caloric restriction during the 1944-1945 Dutch famine, taking antibiotics and the use of electric blankets by African-American women. (Yes, there were actual studies reporting all these different findings!)

Recommended by John Parks Trowbridge MD: "Before I Go"
Medical Justice
In his sixth year of neurosurgical residency at Stanford, Dr. Paul Kalanithi developed night sweats, back pain and cough. His weight dropped precipitously. In May 2013, he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell EGFR positive lung cancer. He published a moving op-ed piece in the New York Times called "How Long Have I Got Left." Kalanithi died on March 9 this year. His most recent publication, "Before I Go," moved me to tears.

Prepare for ICIM's 60th Meeting: Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2016, Chicago

By ICIM member and Chicago speaker Jerry Tennant, MD
As you may know, at the current rate, 53 percent of Americans will die from cancer. After nearly 100 years of experimentation with chemotherapy, only about 5 percent of those who get cancer get rid of the tumors and not have them return. Now a study by Bob Jones has shown that there is a dental problem (root canal, bone infection, etc.) in the same acupuncture meridian as the cancer in 100 percent of 10,000 patients studied.

New Member Profile

Andrew Lipton DO
Dr. Lipton seeks to empower his patients and makes them a partner in the medical decision-making process. Lipton takes the time he needs for each patient. The average physician visit of five to seven minutes is often not enough time to be heard and Lipton and staff often spend more than twice the time a traditional doctor spends with his or her patients. As with holistic medicine overall, a holistic doctor tends to view a person in terms of overall wellness, not sickness, since wellness is the body's normal and most natural state.

No more 'pinkwashing'! Support an integrative approach to breast cancer
Alliance for Natural Health USA
Komen recently denied that BPA increases the risk of breast cancer, despite mounting evidence to the contrary. We wish we could say that we were surprised. But this is all too characteristic of the Komen modus operandi.
