Implanted magnets for GERD? What's next?

By Dr. Janet Levatin
Gastroesophageal reflux disease affects a significant percentage of the American population. It has been viewed as a problem caused by overproduction of stomach acid and has been treated with medications that suppress acid secretion called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs for short. The problem has become so prevalent in recent years that Nexium, a popular PPI, is one of the most commonly prescribed medicines in the U.S. Nexium and other PPIs net billions for big pharmaceutical companies each year. GERD, however, is not usually caused by overproduction of stomach acid, but rather by dysfunction of the valve between the esophagus and the stomach called the lower esophageal sphincter.

Healing with language: What's in a name?
SCS Matters
If you say that linguistically some clinic names emphasize the problem rather than the solution, you're right. This has been a common way of naming clinics but even people who are in pain may tend to reject names of clinics that seem to promise 30 minutes more of it. What image comes to mind when you think about a center for cancer or mental illness? In general, the clinic names could be improved with the addition of one word: relief.

Telomerase

Research has recently discovered an "immortalizing enzyme" called telomerase. Telomerase promotes healthy cell division and protects us from the genetic expression of mutation and disease. It helps guard us against early aging and untimely death. In short, healthy cell division aided by telomerase supports our adaptation to life's changes in body, brain and mind.

Before and after
Idea Architects
Jeffrey Cufaude writes, "Before there was any of this that we now associate with an association, there was something much simpler, much truer and much more important: There were people who shared a common interest and cared about connecting with like-minded people. In the end, that's all that is required for an association to succeed."

Published by ICIM member Dr. Jonathan Collin:
The Townsend Letter

As discussed in part 1 of "Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease: Testing and Treatment", metabolic syndrome and the cardiovascular disease that it creates is a problem of lifestyle habits that generate inflammation. That inflammatory process leads to endothelial dysfunction, which results in vascular plaque formation. Part 2 will focus on the integrative solutions that directly target endothelial health and repair.

11 sponsorship mantras to keep your team on track
Power Sponsorship
Kim Skildum Reid writes, "Doing sponsorship training is one of my favorite parts of this job. And even though my training is meant to change the way people do sponsorship, it still stuns me when, years after just a day or two of training, people tell me that what they learned "changed everything." They often go on to recite some specific mantra they and their team have adopted that has guided their sponsorships ever since." Here is a mixture of sponsor and sponsorship seeker mantras but most of them can be tweaked to work for either side.
