ICIM is a medical association of physicians dedicated to exploring and teaching integrative treatments to help our patients. Sept. 24-28 we gather in Dearborn, Michigan, for our conference "End Pain." This newsletter is designed to prepare attendees and continue discussions of the education we provide.

The severity of chronic pain can be mild to severe and it can be episodic or continuous. In some cases the pain partially affects the patient’s well-being, level of function, and quality of life and in others it is completely incapacitating. The goal of pain management is to rapidly provide relief and improve the quality of life, including the ability to participate in day-to-day activities. On July 1, two Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy articles were published that appear to show contradictory results regarding the effects of chelation therapy on clinical events and the quality of life. For those who don't live and breathe TACT (as I do, being one of the investigators), the 10-year trial tested a disodium ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid-based chelation solution versus placebo chelation, and high doses of oral multivitamins and multiminerals versus oral placebo in post-MI patients age 50 or older on OMT including statins and anti-platelets. For this piece, I will focus on the active-active versus placebo-placebo comparison.

Dental composites for kids: Even worse than mercury amalgam?

Low back pain? Don't blame the weather

Australian researchers reveal that sudden, acute episodes of low back pain are not linked to weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind direction and precipitation. Findings published in Arthritis Care & Research, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology, indicate that the risk of low back pain slightly increases with higher wind speed or wind gusts, but was not clinically significant.
