Original, unpublished article by ICIM member Guy Chamberland M.Sc., Ph.D.: Chronic pain management: Use of a devil's claw agent to inhibit cytokine release
The severity of chronic pain can be mild to severe and it can be episodic or continuous. In some cases the pain partially affects the patient's well-being, level of function and quality of life and in others it is completely incapacitating. The goal of pain management is to rapidly provide relief and improve the quality of life, including the ability to participate in day-to-day activities.

By Terry Chappell MD, Program Chairman of ICIM's beginning and advanced chelation workshops Sept 24-28 for physicians and staff: Protocol controversies for treating cardiovascular disease with EDTA chelation
The Trial To Assess Chelation Therapy is the only large, randomized clinical trial to provide statistically significant evidence that EDTA chelation therapy with high-dose multivitamins can reduce future cardiac events in patients with known cardiovascular disease. TACT utilized the published protocol that is used by organizations such as the American College for Advancement in Medicine, the International College of Integrative Medicine, the American Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology, and the International Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology, all of which teach physicians how to administer the therapy and/or test them to provide certification.

By ICIM member Dr. Marina Johnson: 'The Silent Connection Between Estrogen and Osteoporosis'
After menopause without the use of estrogen, a woman can lose up to 20 percent of her bone mass. This increases her risk for osteoporosis leading to loss of height, hip fractures, chronic pain and disability. Of women who suffer hip fractures, 24 percent die of complications within a year of the injury. Osteoporosis of the spine leads to the familiar "dowager's hump." A dowager's hump is a prominence on the back resulting from collapse of the spine from spontaneous vertebral fractures. When it's severe, the woman is totally bent over and cannot stand up straight. It is tragic to see a woman suffering from something that could have been prevented.

ICIM member comments and questions
ICIM
Question 1:
"Over the past several months, we've heard deferring interpretations of the Drug Quality and Security Act signed into law by President Barack Obama last November. Just recently, we have had several compounded supplies recalled from one of our suppliers, Unique, and received the attached literature from McGuff Compounding which states that 'office-use' compounding is now prohibited. Any input or information would be great." – Ann Auburn DO

Fish Oil — Friend or Foe? Debate it in Dearborn

By ICIM 'End Pain' speaker David Brownstein MD: Fish oil pills: Ineffective and dangerous
Fish oil pills have become one of the most widely used supplements on the market, with sales reaching nearly $1.1 billion in 2011. Many patients come to me already taking fish oil pills. When I ask them why, most respond that they want to prevent heart disease, or that they are taking the supplements as an anti-inflammatory. Almost all of them are surprised to learn what I will tell you now: Long-term (over one month) use of fish oil pills does not have anti-inflammatory effects, and it does not prevent heart disease.

176 days until ICIM's Members Retreat at Maya Tulum

By Elizabeth Vaughan MD: Why I loved our last retreat at a sister spa to Maya Tulum
Eventbrite - ICIM Community Members Retreat
"I broadened my exposure to therapies that I am unfamiliar with. I also know who to call for more information and I feel comfortable calling them because of shared times and experiences in Costa Rica. I am thinking seriously about going back to bring in 2012 at Pura Vida. What a magical, energetically healing environment. All of my sessions (Watsu, various massages, facials) were relaxing and/or gently energizing in a very healthful grounded manner. I compared Hawaiian, Ayurvedic, water and Thai massages. Each unique, each healing. Bodytalk helped me to integrate everything at the end of the week. Do it later, not earlier. I saw Chuck this weekend at NC Integrative Med Soc where I spoke on employee issues. It was great seeing him stateside. We had so much fun together in CR. I'd do it again in a heartbeat." - Dr. Elizabeth R. Vaughan, ABIHM, ABCMT, ABIM

Integrative medicine is personalized medicine by Glenn Sabin
FON
In the allopathic world, personalized medicine is all the buzz. Although a decade after decoding the human genome has not yet resulted in the panacea leading to new cures that was once thought, huge strides are being made in growing the knowledge base of genomics, as well as molecular immunology and biotechnology. Over 2000 molecular diagnostic and genetic tests are available today with many novel targeted therapies in the pipeline. Emerging technologies and powerful new computational and mathematical tools are swiftly moving medicine from its current reactive mode to a predictive, preventative, personalized and participatory mode. This is called "P4 Medicine."
