ICIM Chelation Speaker Robban Sica, MD: The optimal treatment for hypothyroidism
About.com
Since I believe that hypothyroidism is a clinical diagnosis, the lab values are not the determining factor for me. Many clinically hypothyroid patients have test results within the reference range and yet respond beautifully to treatment. The lab reference range is based on the last 100-200 samples (from symptomatic patients) submitted to the lab for testing; they are not determined by testing optimally healthy individuals. These tests, therefore, can miss the diagnosis and be misleading.

By new ICIM member Dr. Marina Johnson: Avoiding hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the second most frequently performed surgery, after C-section, for women of reproductive age in the United States. The latest studies show that approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are done each year in the U.S. and half of these women also have their ovaries removed at the time of their hysterectomy. There are presently 20 million U.S. women who have had a hysterectomy. Women between the ages of 40 and 44 have hysterectomies more frequently than any other age group.

Recommended by ICIM Exhibitor Douglas Laboratories: Polyphenol-rich fruits in neurocognitive health
Small fruits are a rich source of bioactive substances, including polyphenols. Numerous health benefits of fruits and vegetables have been largely attributable to this family of compounds, the polyphenols. These polyphenols include flavonoids (anthocyanins, catechins, flavonols, flavanones, and isoflavones), stilbenes, and tannins such as proanthocyanidins. The nation would save approximately $17 billion in healthcare costs if Americans consumed just one additional serving of fruits or vegetables each day according to the 2013 Union of Concerned Scientists report.

Fish Oil — Friend or Foe? Debate it in Dearborn

Fish oil and the 'Eskimo diet': Another medical myth debunked
MinnPost
During the 1970s, two Danish researchers, Hans Olaf Bang and Jorn Dyerberg, published a series of studies (starting with this one) in which they connected the low rate of heart disease among the Inuit of Greenland to their diet, which contained large amounts of fish and other marine animals. Thus began the nutritional recommendation that the rest of us should eat plenty of oily (fatty) fish to protect ourselves from heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Why corporate retreats need to make a comeback
The Washington Post
In 2008, after receiving bailout money, AIG executives spent over $400,000 on a corporate retreat. Hosted at the lavish St. Regis Resort and Spa in Monarch Beach, California, the executives treated themselves to over $150,000 in food alone in only a week. Understandably, the public was outraged when this information leaked.

By ICIM Member Catherine Waller: Exploring functional medicine, a new generation of healthcare
Waller Wellness Center
As patients' healthcare needs and knowledge develops, many health care practitioners here in the Rochester Hills area and elsewhere are making a transition toward functional medicine. Functional medicine differs from traditional medicine in many important ways. Traditional medicine tends to be disease centered. Functional medicine takes a whole-patient approach, and helps people maintain better health overall instead of just treating discrete illnesses.
