ICIM "End Pain" Speakers and Schedule

Events

Sept. 25-28, Dearborn Inn, Dearborn, Michigan

Jan. 3-10, 2015, Members Community Retreat at Maya Tulum, Mexico

ICIM is a medical association of physicians dedicated to exploring and teaching integrative treatments to help our patients. Sept. 24-28 we gather in Dearborn, Michigan, for our conference "End Pain." This newsletter is designed to prepare attendees and continue discussions of the education we provide.

Why end pain?
Wendy Chappell-Dick, ICIM executive director
Ending pain is one of the goals that drew our program chairman, Terry Chappell M.D., into the field of integrative medicine. In the mid-70s he was working as a traveling doctor for the low-income folks of Appalachia. For many of his patients, pain meds were not an options due to cost or addiction. So, he turned to hypnotherapy as a technique for pain management. I remember his quiet voice using relaxation and deep breathing techniques to put us kids to sleep. He also started experimenting with acupressure and auriculotherapy.

By ICIM 'End Pain' attendee Dr. Marina Johnson: Understanding integrative medicine
I believe our healthcare system needs to be more patient- centered and engage patients in their own care. American medicine excels at crisis intervention with innovative drugs and surgical procedures. Yet chronic illness comprises the majority of problems that most physicians see in their office. Chronic health problems are adversely affected by poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking and excess alcohol. Another factor affecting chronic disease management is that insurance companies typically do not reimburse for measures to prevent disease. They instead wait until a serious disease has occurred that generally is much more costly to treat.

Recommended by ICIM 'End Pain' exhibitor Carol Petersen CNP: Ice buckets: NOT the Cure for ALS
GreenMedInfo
Let's stop pretending like pouring ice on ourselves means anything until we can acknowledge the research that some of the causes and cures for ALS already exist — none of them involving pharmaceutical intervention.

Tweet of the Week

By ICIM member Dr. L. Terry Chappell: @doctor_chappell Do you have fibromyalgia?
Previous criteria to make the diagnosis of fibromyalgia have included a detailed listing of how many tender areas you have throughout the body out of a possible 18 points. Dr. Andrew Gross of University of California SF calls this "a complete waste of time." Instead, he has the patient fill out a questionnaire. The most important factors are widespread pain lasting at least three months, fatigue, poor sleep and no other disease causing the symptoms. Rather than anti-depressants and pain medications — the usual treatment — I immediately check for yeast imbalance, food allergies and insufficient digestive factors.

Fish Oil — Friend or Foe? Debate it in Dearborn

Fish oil may help curb seizure frequency in epilepsy
Medical Xpress
Low doses of fish oil may help to curb the frequency of epileptic seizures when drug treatment no longer works, suggests a small study published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry. But high doses were no better than dummy (placebo treatment), the findings indicated. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are able to cross over from the bloodstream into heart cells where they work to stabilise heart rhythm and protect against heart attacks.

Recommended by ICIM 'End Pain' speaker Robban Sica: FDA, flooded with protests, revises food safety rules
Alliance for Natural Health
The agency has responded to comments from ANH-USA activists and other stakeholders. Here's what they're proposing now. In May, we reported that the FDA is currently drafting rules that implement the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act. As we noted then, some of the rules that have been proposed so far have brought a deafening outcry from small farmers, prominent members of Congress, consumers and even big business.
