Paradox & Controversy: Infections, Cancer Management, and Energy Medicine
Chicago
Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2015

ICIM is a medical association of physicians dedicated to exploring and teaching integrative treatments to help our patients. Jan 3-10, 2015 we gather in Maya Tulum, Mexico, for our members retreat. This newsletter is designed to prepare attendees and continue discussions of the education we provide.

Fixing compounding pharmacy
The International Association of Compounding Pharmacists
The International Association of Compounding Pharmacists have identified five key "Fix DQSA" issues that they will introduce to the 2015 legislature. While some things still need to be ironed out the key fundamentals are there. This is the most effective "fix" I have seen so far. I believe we must decide on a single path forward and everyone support it, physicians, pharmacist and patients. This will, I believe, provide a unified approach. We will need significant support to push this through congress.

By ICIM member Catherine Waller MD: Functional medicine and the hormone therapy connection
Waller Wellness Center
Hormones rule all of our body's processes. They help determine our longevity, weight, reproduction, energy levels, sleep patterns and even our neurological health. Hormone therapy can help enhance our ability to optimize the hormones related to weight loss: cortisol, leptin, melatonin, DHEA, estrogen, testosterone and more. Functional medical testing tells physicians which interventions will best serve each patient's personal needs.

Widespread chronic pain seen in study of US military
Pain Medicine News
With the country at war on two fronts for most of the 21st century, it should come as no surprise that chronic pain, and the treatment of it, is a significant concern within the U.S. military. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine sought to gain unprecedented understanding of the scope of the chronic pain problem, and the consequences of its management, within the armed services by surveying more than 2,500 combat personnel who had served in either Iraq or Afghanistan in 2011. The goal was to discover the prevalence of chronic pain in this population, and to get a sense of the use of opioids (both appropriate and inappropriate).

Government puts doctors in stranglehold over medical testing and diagnostics
Alliance for Natural Health USA
One test per year not related to a specific illness under Medicare? So much for preventive medicine. In recent weeks, we have been telling you about a new FDA proposal to increase its control over low-cost laboratory-developed tests — including locally performed custom diagnostics and tests for rare conditions. Tests like these are the future of medicine.

71 days until ICIM's Members Retreat at Maya Tulum

36 hours in Tulum, Mexico
The New York Times
The good news is that you still can't flush the toilet paper in Tulum. The plumbing, like the balmy weather and a tenacious iguana population, is deeply rooted in the identity of this town an hour and a half south of Cancun. But even a quasi-functional plumbing infrastructure can't dissuade tourists. Which leads me to the less good news. If you haven't been to Tulum in the last few years, a heads-up: It's a whole lot bigger than you remember. Today's Tulum has three things many never thought possible: traffic, crowds and restaurants with waiting lists. But don't despair. In fact, the town (it's not a village anymore) is more exciting than ever. The beach is still stunning. The ruins are still there. The food is spicy and authentic. And for those willing, there are secret gems a long, dusty way from the beaten path.

A Personal Story

ICIM member Valerie Ritchey MD
