Shared on Facebook by ICIM member Carol Petersen RPh: Why mammography screening is being abolished in Switzerland
Real Farmacy
Last year, the Swiss Medical Board, an independent health technology assessment initiative, was asked to prepare a review of mammography screening. The team of experts on the board included a medical ethicist, a clinical epidemiologist, a pharmacologist, an oncologic surgeon, a nurse scientist, a lawyer and a health economist. After a year of reviewing the available evidence and its implications, they noted they became "increasingly concerned" about what they were finding. The "evidence" simply did not back up the global consensus of other experts in the field suggesting that mammograms were safe and capable of saving lives.

Tweeted by ICIM's @sayerjigmi: Miami area nuclear plant in partial shutdown after steam leak
GreenMedInfo
Perhaps the most dangerous nuclear reactor in the U.S. is in partial shutdown following the discovery of a steam leak. South Florida's ailing Turkey Point nuclear power station is in the news again, with Unit 4, one of its two reactors, taken offline recently due to a steam leak, according to a Dec. 1 update released by Industrial Info Resources online. Conspicuously, as of the writing of this article, there is no indication that this highly concerning event has received mainstream media coverage.

By ICIM member Dale Guyer MD: Vitamin D – cellular sunshine
The Guyer Institute
I have often humorously referred to Vitamin D as "liquid sunshine." This is due to the often dramatic improvements in mood and inflammation patients report following the treatment of Vitamin D deficiency that can commonly occur during the fall and winter months. Especially with Vitamin D injections, very frequently even on the very next day, many patients report elevations of mood, enhanced mental clarity and focusing, and diminished symptoms of inflammation with aches and pains.

By ICIM member Catherine Waller MD: Antioxidants, free radicals and the harmful effects of aging
Waller Wellness Center
Antioxidants are an important part of a healthy diet, but until recent years, they didn't get a whole lot of press. That's because until recently, there hadn't been a lot of research on what they were and how they worked in the body to help stave off disease and keep the aging processes in check.

Scientists identify bone cells that could help children who need corrective facial surgery
Medical Xpress
Our bones are smart. Bones know that by adolescence it's time to stop growing longer and stronger, and from that point on bones keep their shape by healing injuries. This question of why bones grow longer and stronger in children, but stay static in adults — yet retain the ability to heal themselves, has long perplexed scientists in the bone regeneration field. But researchers from the University of Michigan, Kyoto University and Harvard University believe they may have unearthed a big piece of this puzzle.

Comparing the metal concentration in the nails of healthy and cancer patients living in the Malwa Region of Punjab, India with a random European group — a follow-up study
Trace Minerals International
The cancer prevalence in the Malwa region of Punjab is much higher than the national average cancer prevalence in India. In our previous study on hair metal analysis, we located a high metal burden in Punjabi cancer patients and their live-in relatives, suggesting that an excessive metal exposure is a factor in the pathogenesis of cancer.

Practice Management

Should health systems send patients abroad to save money?
Medical Xpress
While various options can be explored to rationalize resources in the health sector, delegating certain medical services to foreign hospitals should be assessed in an interdisciplinary context, says Catherine Régis of the University of Montreal's Faculty of Law. If you were offered the possibility of being treated or operated in another country more rapidly and at a lower cost to the government, what would you say?
