BELIEVE IT spring has sprung! Before the showers begin, here are some timely tips by IDRC business insurance provider, The Co-Operators
IDRC
If water enters your home as a result of ice backup, remove standing water as soon as it is safe to do so as mould contamination can appear within 24 hours — dry the area thoroughly and remove soaked building materials, including drywall and floor covering. Check the drainage system (storm sewer) on your street. If it is blocked, report the condition to the authorities or if safe to do so, try to clear the area around the sewer entrance. Consider having a professionally-licensed contractor remove all the snow and ice from the roof surface, overhangs, eaves and gutters.

Ask Jeffrey: Mom and dad need decor, too
National Post
It's typical for families to prioritize the public areas of a home and the kids' rooms when carving up the decor budget. I have worked with countless clients (single and married with children) who tell me to only focus on decorating rooms they entertain guests in. The term "sanctuary" can be overused, but I believe it's an appropriate goal when decorating bedrooms. Life is hectic and we all need a calming space to retreat to whether we have kids or not.

Minimalist furniture that won't get ruined by pets, kids, or a spilled glass of wine
Glamour
The clever duo behind Young House Love (also parents and pet owners) suggests buying furniture from School Outfitters, a site that sells to actual schools. Think about it: if a chair or rug was meant to withstand the wrath of thousands of pre-schoolers — or, worse, high school students — it can probably handle whatever your household is dishing out. And the best part: this stuff is WAY cheaper than similar, minimalist-inspired pieces from traditional furniture stores.
