LGBT tourism on the rise

More than 445,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered tourists visited Argentina in 2014 and they contributed more than US$1.2 billion to the local economy, according to data from the Tourism Ministry's National Institute for Tourism Promotion (Inprotur). The data illustrates how the LGBT segment has consolidated itself as important for the sector as a whole, having seen particularly high growth since marriage equality became law.

'It's okay to be gay' in Mexico City

The crowd at Marrakech Salon, a popular gay bar in the heart of the Mexican capital, was boisterous on the night before Halloween as people danced to Gloria Estefan and other Spanish language pop stars. Many of these revelers eventually made their way to La Purísima, another bar across the street on Avenida de República de Cuba.

Strict sharia forces gays into hiding in Indonesia's Aceh

Overwhelmed by fear, members of the main gay rights group in the Indonesian town of Banda Aceh started burning piles of documents outside their headquarters in late October, worried that the sharia police would raid them at any moment. Indonesia's northernmost province of Aceh had weeks earlier passed an anti-homosexuality law that punishes anyone caught having gay sex with 100 lashes.

OC Visitors Bureau Director gives credit to LGBT community for rise in tourism
