IGLTA announces annual travel Honors
IGLTA
Our 32nd Annual Global Convention in Los Angeles (8-11 April) provides an opportunity to acknowledge the work of individuals and businesses that have improved the landscape of gay and lesbian travel. This year's honorees as selected by the IGLTA board from our members and allies are: Hanns Ebensten Hall of Fame Award: Olivia; Community Honor (based in IGLTA's convention host city): The Los Angeles LGBT Center; Destination Pioneer: The Curaçao Tourist Board; LGBT Event Pioneer: Doug Swallow, founder of Gay Day at Disney; Networking: Cámara de Comerciantes LGBT de Colombia (the Colombia LGBT Chamber of Commerce); and Travel Writer: Jurriaan Teulings. The IGLTA staff has selected U.K. Ambassador Jonathan Mountford of made as the Ambassador of the Year.

The application process is now open for IGLTA's 2015-2016 Global Ambassador Team. We are looking for motivated individuals in tourism with an interest in giving back to IGLTA and the LGBT travel industry. You must be an active IGLTA member and have attended a minimum of one IGLTA Annual Global Convention prior to applying. Please submit the completed Ambassador Application by 15 February if you’d like to be announced at the Los Angeles convention as part of the 2015-2016 Ambassador program, but we accept applications year-round. The latest trends in this growing and varied niche were in focus at the 15th Conference on LGBT Tourism & Hospitality, which took place in December at the Bellagio Las Vegas. During and after the conference, several of the participating individuals and organizations shared their top tips for marketing to this niche — and many of these recommendations can work especially well for travel agencies looking to expand their presence.

Dominican advocates, officials to launch LGBT tourism campaign

A Dominican advocacy group is working with government officials and travel industry representatives on a campaign designed to promote LGBT tourism and gay rights in the Caribbean country. Members of the Center for Integrated Training and Research, a Dominican advocacy group known by the Spanish acronym COIN that has fought the AIDS epidemic in the country and throughout the Caribbean for more than two decades, will meet with representatives of the Dominican Ministry of Tourism and Tourism Police at the JW Marriott Hotel in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital.

Slovakia referendum on gay-adoption ban fails

A referendum to prevent granting new rights to gays in Slovakia, an ex-Communist state in the European Union's east, failed due to a low turnout as opponents of the popular vote urged people to stay at home. Only 21.4 percent of 4.41 million eligible voters cast their ballots, below the required 50 percent quorum in this predominantly Roman Catholic country of five million people to make the national-vote results legally binding, final results released by the Slovak electoral commission showed.

Labour pledges to tackle anti-LGBT hate crimes

The Labour Party has pledged to crack down on hate crimes, including those against members of the LGBT community. A new cross-Government strategy was announced by Labour recently, which sets out an action plan to tackle hate crime including anti-LGBT, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and racist attacks and those based on disability.

Gays to march for 1st time in Washington, DC, St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Washington, D.C., St. Patrick's Day Parade committee has accepted an application from the The DC Center for the LGBT community to march in this year's parade. It will be the first-ever LGBT contingent to march in the parade, the Washington Blade reports. Washington now joins New York and Boston in allowing gay groups for the first time.

Gay Vietnamese come out early, but face battles at home
Voice of America
Gay Vietnamese are coming out at an early age and doing so in a more welcoming environment, according to a new survey. Of those who participated in the online study, 78 percent had come out already, and 74 percent recognized their sexual identity between ages 10 and 20. The results are not an accurate sample of Vietnam overall, because the average age of respondents was 22.

Same-sex adoption law stagnant in Colombia

The final decision lays in the hands of a conservative judge that may not approve the amendment on the childhood and adolescence code of adoption. The Colombian Constitutional Court voted recently on a bill to allow same-sex couples to adopt, but the measure remains stagnant since it received four votes for and four against.
