    Oregon gay marriage ban struck down by federal judge; same-sex marriages begin
    The Oregonian
    Oregon's ban on same-sex marriages was struck down by U.S. District Judge Michael McShane, who ruled that the prohibition violated the federal constitutional rights of gays and lesbians. Jubilant couples who anticipated a favorable decision from the judge began the rush to officially wed at locations around the state. McShane ordered that his ruling take immediate effect.

    US on track to exceed tourism goal: 100 million visitors by 2021

    In May 2012, President Barack Obama unveiled the nation's first-ever National Travel and Tourism Strategy. Designed to increase travel to and within the United States, it set an ambitious goal: achieve 100 million annual visitors by 2021 — up 61 percent from 62 million in 2011. Two years later, the United States is on pace to not only meet its goal, but to exceed it, according to the U.S. Travel Association.

    More hotel brands looking east for profit

    The latest buzz about the hospitality industry has been a renewed spate of global expansions, particularly to the Eastern Hemisphere. The Gulf and Asian markets are looking good, showing a high potential of growth. The icing on the top is the latest reports show an increasing percentage of travel booked for Asia and the Middle East. The World Travel and Tourism Council has predicted a 4.3 percent increase for the travel and tourism industry in 2014, with most of the growth centered around Asia. They have also forecast that China will overtake the U.S. as the world's largest travel and tourism economy by 2027.

    US considers more easing of visa policy for Chinese

    The United States may further ease its visa policy for Chinese tourists, a move welcomed by tourists and travel agencies in China and the U.S. Arne Sorenson, a member of the President Barack Obama's Export Council, said recently that the U.S. is considering a more progressive visa policy for Chinese tourists, including a possible visa waiver for returning visitors.
