Meet the Board Treasurer: Ed Salvato
IGLTA
I'm the editor in chief of ManAboutWorld and I've been involved with IGLTA since my first convention in 1998. As a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors I work very closely with the other members of the board as well as IGLTA's president/CEO to establish goals for the organization in terms of short, medium and long-term strategy, revenues, and investments. As the treasurer and head of the finance committee, I meet regularly with the president/CEO and accountant to review the assets, liabilities, revenues and expenses of the organization. I then report to the board on those discussions and provide a reviewed set of financial documents.

Tiptoeing out of the closet: The history and future of LGBT rights in China
The Atlantic
Recent progress toward equal treatment of same-sex couples in the U.S. has sparked a wave of in-depth reporting on the fate of China's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Both domestic and international coverage focused on the increase in opportunities for LGBT activist groups to make their voices heard. The ability to openly discuss LGBT issues in online chat rooms and on social media is increasingly matched by positive attention in traditional, even state-run, media.

Nice, France is the second most popular city for gay marriage
The Riviera Times
Just three months on from the legalization of gay marriage in France, Nice has been revealed as the second most popular French city for same-sex couples. Despite an initial resistance to the law, right-wing Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi has since come out in support of the legislation and has himself officiated several such unions. Nice follows Paris, with Toulouse and Lyon coming third and fourth in the rankings by radio station France Inter.

Thailand, conservative but tolerant, may legalize gay marriage
Reuters via Yahoo News
Known for its laissez-faire attitude, Thailand has positioned itself as a holiday destination for gay couples and could soon be cashing in on another niche market if a proposed law makes it the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage.

Hawaii gay marriage effort moves forward
The Huffington Post
Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie attempted to nudge state lawmakers into action last week, releasing a draft of a bill that would make his state the 14th to legalize gay marriage. Stop autopublishing to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
By Amber Bynum
Should your business post everything automatically to Facebook to Twitter and Instagram? There are many apps, websites and platforms that make it easy to update in one place and post on every social media platform attached to your name at the same time. Just because it's possible, should you do it? No — unless you want to lose followers, likes and friends.

Gay marriages get recognition from the IRS
The New York Times
All same-sex couples who are legally married will be recognized as such for federal tax purposes, even if the state where they live does not recognize their union, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service said last week. It is the broadest federal rule change to come out of the landmark Supreme Court decision in June that struck down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, and a sign of how quickly the government is moving to treat gay couples in the same way that it does straight couples.

Are we just sellers of travel?
By Shebby Lee
Like any dedicated travel professional, I make an effort to read at least part of all the trade publications that cross my desk or land in my email box. The danger of this, of course, is that occasionally I read something that really gets my dander up. One such item was a line I read recently in an Arnie Weissmann opinion piece in Travel Weekly decrying the proven fact that young people are not attracted to careers selling travel. I zeroed in on the phrase "selling travel." In fact, I was stunned by it. I wondered, is that the business I'm in: selling?
