Post-holiday sales surge, but season's profits might be mixed

The day after Christmas was one of the biggest shopping days of 2011, wrapping up the year with a big bang, mall managers and market analysts said. Mall parking lots were full, and cash registers were ringing all over California and the United States. As a result, market-research company ShopperTrak said that Dec. 26 was the fourth-busiest shopping day of the holiday season.

After witnessing record-setting cotton prices in the 2010-11 marketing year, cotton growers across the globe reacted to the sharp rise in prices by significantly increasing the world's cotton acreage during 2011-12. However, in spite of earlier expectations of significantly higher world output, the cotton market struggled with serious setbacks during the 2011 summer production cycle.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association has urged the government to immediately remove the duty being levied on petroleum products. APTMA Group Leader Gohar Ejaz said in addition to removal of duty on petroleum products, the Government should equally distribute the 300MMCFD gas between the textile industry and the independent power producers.
